Watch Wemby's Impressive Math Skills Discussing NBA Awards 65-Game Rule, 'Unfair' to Drop This Year

Victor Wembanyama has shown off many skills throughout his incredible 2025-26 season, but perhaps the two most unexpected have been his ability to debate and do math on the fly.

After leading the San Antonio Spurs to a win over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night, Wembanyama spent two minutes during his press conference going over finer points of the 65-game threshold before concluding that it would be "unfair" to drop the rule this season since it's already in place.

There is a possibility that Luka Dončić will become awards eligible even though he will finish the regular season with 64 games played. He has filed an "Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge" because he missed two games in December to be present for the birth of his child.

Dončić's case will be heard by an independent arbitrator early next week. There is a feeling that he has a strong case to win the grievance and be eligible for postseason awards.

The most impressive calculation that Wembanyama rattled off the top of his head was 75 percent of 82 games as exactly 61.5. He is either someone who is a math whiz, or at least thought about these thresholds a lot in his spare time.

By the way, all of this came after Wembanyama dropped 40 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in just 26 minutes against the Mavs. He outdueled Cooper Flagg, who put up 33 on 13-of-25 shooting in 32 minutes.

Wembanyama did say that he is of the opinion it's "good" not to have a threshold for determining awards, but that 75 percent of the games played would be a fair way for the league to determine who is eligible for postseason honors.

Even though Wembanyama is only at 64 games played heading into the regular-season finale on Sunday, he did meet the minutes threshold required to become eligible for awards and All-NBA recognition.

Friday's discussion came two weeks after Wembanyama also had a 20-minute debate, of sorts, with the media during a postgame press conference making his case to win the NBA MVP award.

The Spurs will wrap up the regular season on Sunday against the Denver Nuggets. They have already clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. Their 62 wins this season are their most since finishing 67-15 in 2015-16.
