TCU football coach Sonny Dykes has agreed to a new contract including a multiyear extension ahead of his fifth season with the Horned Frogs, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Friday.

Dykes was previously signed through 2028 at a salary of more than $7 million, according to Thamel and USA Today.

His previous contract ranked 30th among college football coaches in annual salary, per USA Today.

Dykes led TCU to a national championship game in his first season with the program in 2022.

He signed his extension after coaching to the Horned Frogs to consecutive nine-win seasons capped off by bowl game wins in 2024 and 2025.

Dykes, who previously coached at Louisiana Tech, Cal and SMU before joining the Big 12, has compiled a 36-17 record (.679 win percentage) and 3-1 bowl game record at TCU.

Last season, he brought in a recruiting class that ranked No. 24 in the nation, per 247Sports. His team finished the season ranked No. 25 in the final AP poll.

TCU had been speaking with Dykes about an extension since at least February, according to a Feb. 18 newsletter from athletic director Mike Buddie.

Buddie praised Dykes in the letter for being "laser-focused in the end-of-year review of the program" while making "a number of difficult decisions with the goal of bringing TCU back to the College Football Playoff."

Those early decisions included hiring former UConn offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis and bringing in Harvard transfer Jaden Craig to step in for former TCU quarterback Josh Hoover.

Dykes told reporters when TCU's spring camp began last week he thought he and the program were "getting close" on a new contract.

"I think we're there, but the legal stuff is getting all sorted out," Dykes said, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Steven Johnson.

Now that he has his new contract, Dykes will be tasked with helping TCU make it back into the College Football Playoff behind a revamped offense led by Craig and Hoover.

The CFP will remain limited to 12 teams next fall, although potential future expansion to a 14- or 16-team field could increase the chances the Horned Frogs qualify in the near future.
