2026 NBA Playoff Matchups We Want To See Most

Eric PincusApr 4, 2026

As the NBA's 2025-26 regular season winds down, the playoffs inch ever closer. Six teams in each conference will lock in a proper berth, while another four will fight through the play-in to earn the Nos. 7 and 8 seeds.

How far an individual team may go through the postseason is often determined by matchups. Some would produce the best basketball; others, more nostalgic pairings.

The following are the 2026 NBA playoff matchups we want to see most.

Detroit Pistons vs. Charlotte Hornets

The Detroit Pistons are one of the NBA's great turnaround stories after a handful of rebuilding years.

Suddenly a serious juggernaut, led by Cade Cunningham and a team-wide commitment to defense, the Pistons believe they have a legitimate shot at the championship (provided Cunningham returns to full strength after suffering a collapsed lung).

Similarly, the Hornets have been an awful team on the court for several years, only to burst into respectability with one of the most explosive offenses in the league.

Potential Rookie of the Year Kon Knueppel, along with LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges, and Moussa Diabate, has developed into a lethal combination that gives opposing defenses fits.

Stingy defense vs. incredible offense. Sign us up. Charlotte needs to lose the first play-in game and win the second to match up against the top-seeded Pistons.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Houston Rockets

Two of the NBA's old heads are still incredibly productive for players of any age.

LeBron James, 41, is setting records daily (most recently, the all-time wins record combining the regular season and playoffs). Kevin Durant, 37, just passed Michael Jordan on the all-time scoring list.

The pair have faced off in three NBA Finals (2012, 2017, 2018), with Durant holding a 2-1 edge. This could be the last opportunity to see these titans go head-to-head.

The Lakers appear well-entrenched as the No. 3 seed, though a late swoon could drop them as many as three spots (certainly more feasible with Luka Dončić sidelined with a hamstring injury). The Houston Rockets are neck-and-neck with the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves in the 4-6 range.

L.A. recently took back-to-back games in Houston, but the playoffs are a different animal altogether.

Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers

The Boston Celtics were not supposed to be good this season.

With Jayson Tatum sidelined due to an Achilles tear and core players (Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis) traded away to avoid luxury taxes and apron penalties, it looked like the Celtics were heading into a down year.

Meanwhile, the Sixers thought they'd be a contender last year, but injuries turned 2024-25 into a 24-win joke. Fortunately, the franchise has rebounded. Joel Embiid has been healthier. Rookie VJ Edgecombe emerged as a standout, and Tyrese Maxey is one of the toughest guards in the league to defend.

Boston would be the favorite in a series, with Tatum returning early, but Philadelphia would be a tough opponent. The 76ers got Paul George back recently from a 25-game suspension for a failed drug test—the time off was an opportunity for the 35-year-old wing to rest his legs.

The Celtics aren't likely to catch the No. 1 Detroit Pistons. The Sixers are competing with the Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors to avoid the play-in (and the Celtics in the first round). But if Philadelphia loses that tight race and wins the first play-in game, we get our wish.

Denver Nuggets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves

While both teams have struggled with injuries, they remain powerhouse postseason rivals that could be near full strength in the coming weeks.

Nikola Jokić and the Nuggets weren't able to get past the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round in 2025. Still, Denver and Minnesota met in both of the two prior years.

En route to their championship in 2023, the Nuggets took out Minnesota in the first round. The Timberwolves are much improved since then, coming off back-to-back conference finals appearances, including a seven-game series win over Denver in 2024.

Jokić is arguably the most powerful offensive force of his generation. While Rudy Gobert is a couple of years removed from Defensive Player of the Year (2023-24), he's still a formidable presence. With All-Star Anthony Edwards and a strong cast that includes Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels, Minnesota is looking to take that next step to the NBA Finals.

The Nuggets, when healthy, remain a dangerous foe.

San Antonio Spurs vs. LA Clippers

Victor Wembanyama is making a legitimate MVP case with the San Antonio Spurs.

In what will be his NBA postseason debut, he and the Spurs appear to have the No. 2 seed locked in (though they're within striking distance of the Oklahoma City Thunder).

Even without Wembanyama, the Spurs have a potent attack with guards such as De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Devin Vassell. The team is well-coached, deep, and a genuine threat.

Earlier in the season, the Clippers looked dead in the water. With Kawhi Leonard playing some of his best basketball, and after a busy trade deadline that saw the exits of James Harden and Ivica Zubac, L.A. has been a fun watch.

Newcomers Darius Garland and Bennedict Mathurin have younger, fresher legs, and the franchise has rallied into play-in contention.

Assuming the Spurs stay where they are, the Clippers must hold off the Portland Trail Blazers for the No. 8 spot and beat the No. 7 Phoenix Suns to match Leonard against his former squad in one of our favorite potential matchups for Round 1 of the NBA playoffs.
