Angel Di Maria to PSG: Takeaways From Star's Introductory Press Conference

Christopher SimpsonAug 6, 2015

Angel Di Maria was officially presented as a Paris Saint-Germain player at a press conference on Thursday, and the player revealed his delight at joining the Ligue 1 champions.

Courtesy of GFFN Press Conferences on Twitter, he said:

"

I am very happy to be here at PSG, it has been several years that this team has tried to sign me. PSG's ambition of the Champions League is also mine. I know they have a great project. I want to participate in this project and reach their objective of winning the Champions League.

The Argentinian added that he looked forward to linking up with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ezequiel Lavezzi:

Indeed, Di Maria cited his friendship with Lavezzi as one of the reasons he joined the Parisien outfit:

The 27-year-old leaves Manchester United just 12 months after signing with them for a British transfer record £59.7 million.

In recent months, the midfielder has often been accused of lacking commitment to the cause as he grew increasingly unsettled at Old Trafford following a break-in at his home.

However, Di Maria assured fans he was committed to PSG and would try his best for his new club:

Last season, Di Maria sometimes struggled on the pitch, as he was played out of position and around the midfield. Indeed, WhoScored.com reports that he played in every possible position in midfield and up front, save for as a holding midfielder, never featuring in the same place more than seven times.

Nevertheless, the Argentinian was quick to point out that he is content to play wherever he is asked by manager Laurent Blanc:

Di Maria also revealed the current state of his fitness after limping out of the Copa America final with a hamstring injury:

While the press conference will have excited PSG fans who will hope their club can get the best out of the mercurial talent, United supporters will be unhappy, as Di Maria fired some parting shots at his former club:

As the London Evening Standard's Liam points out, the player's assertion that the Red Devils pursued his sale could lead to fireworks at manager Louis van Gaal's next press conference:

Adding fuel to the fire is the Manchester Evening News' James Robson, who believes Di Maria to possess the attributes United are in short supply of:

With the Argentinian's transfer saga finally over, the Red Devils will now look for a top-quality replacement, with Barcelona's Pedro Rodriguez seeming the most likely candidate, per Adam Shergold of the Daily Mail.

As for Di Maria, all eyes will be on him when he makes his debut for PSG.

Though he remains a world-class midfielder of almost unrivaled creativity and technique, he will surely have a point to prove after a difficult period both on and off the pitch.

In the meantime, look out for Van Gaal's next presser.
