New LeBron James Rumors Reveal 'Motivator' for Potential Lakers Return in NBA Free Agency

Paul KasabianMar 31, 2026

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James has a big decision to make when his contract expires after this season. The 41-year-old could look to return to the Lakers, head to another team or simply call it a career after a phenomenal 23-season NBA run.

On Tuesday, ESPN's Dave McMenamin and Tim Bontemps dropped an article featured their chats with over a dozen league insiders about potential landing spots and factors leading to a decision.

Regarding staying with the Lakers, the ESPN duo relayed this note: "Another motivator, mentioned to ESPN by several league sources when asked to assess James' situation, can't be overlooked: It's hard to beat Southern California's year-round climate and golf courses to fuel his growing obsession."

James' love of golf has certainly made waves since last summer.

James has also tweeted about golf, and PGA Tour players have even critiqued his swing.

It's also the focus of a recent Nike commercial with professional golfer Tom Kim.

Perhaps golf plays a factor in James' decision. Southern California is certainly a place to be if you want to play some golf in your spare time.

Of course, there are plenty of other factors one can imagine as well, namely his physical health/performance, the championship aspirations of the teams he could choose from and whether he'd like to keep playing, among other things.

As far as his game goes, though, that's still in great shape. James is averaging 20.9 points on 51.2 percent shooting, 7.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds in 33.6 minutes per game for the third-place Lakers.

As far as potential teams go for James in 2026-27, the ESPN duo listed the Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers as possibilities.

We'll see what he decides soon enough, but in the interim, the Lakers are looking for win No. 50 on the season Tuesday when they host James' old team, the Cavaliers.
