LeBron James, Knicks Pairing in NBA Free Agency Addressed by NY Insider amid Lakers Rumors
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James hasn't yet decided whether he will return in 2026-27 for a 24th NBA season, but it sounds like a move to the East Coast is on the table if he does.
ESPN's Dave McMenamin and Tim Bontemps suggested that the New York Knicks would be open to adding James for what could be the final season of his legendary career.
"A Knicks team source told ESPN that the franchise would have to decide whether it would be worth it to dramatically change its team complexion for just one season of James -- likely not even a full 82 games when accounting for injuries and rest -- when New York's current core has had steady success," McMenamin and Bontemps stated. "Though the Knicks' current core players -- Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges -- are all between 28 and 30 and 'building together,' as the team source told ESPN, adding James would put New York fully in win-now mode."
James has frequently declared Madison Square Garden as his favorite arena to play in, and he's had prior relationships with members of the Knicks organization that could help facilitate a move to New York. Knicks head coach Mike Brown coached the 41-year-old in two of his four NBA MVP seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Knicks president Leon Rose previously was James' agent, and executive vice president and senior basketball adviser William Wesley has been connected to him since his teenage years.
The Knicks haven't won an NBA title since 1973, so joining New York would also give James a challenge of leading the franchise back to the promised land.
"That would make for the highest of thrills if James and New York actually won the title," McMenamin and Bontemps stated. "However, it could hurt his reputation with Knicks fans forever if the team failed and he became known as the reason the franchise reconfigured what had been its most promising roster in decades."
