Predictions for NBA Free Agents Who Will Command the Most Interest in 2026

Zach BuckleyMar 31, 2026

NBA free agency is no longer the feeding frenzy it's been in the past.

That said, there are still interesting players on the market every year, and the 2026 crop shows no different.

From a near-star scoring guard to an actual All-Star bouncy big to an all-time great (maybe the all-time great), there are legitimate needle-movers up for grabs this summer. Now, there's no guarantee anyone can convince them to leave their current digs, but they'll cash out regardless where they sign.

Let's break out the crystal ball and predict where the most coveted free agents in this summer's class will wind up.

Jalen Duren, C, Restricted

1 of 3
New Orleans Pelicans v Detroit Pistons

While Cade Cunningham's MVP candidacy gets rightfully credited as the primary driver of the Detroit Pistons' spike to the top of the Eastern Conference standings, Duren's All-Star ascension might be second-most critical development in the Motor City.

Always a toolsy rim-runner, Duren has much more to offer than just physical gifts. He's more reliable on both ends than ever, and one of the most productive players of his archetype. You can pretty much pencil him in for a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double at this point.

He has shown some legitimate creation on face-ups and pick-and-rolls, and he has been more of a right-place-at-the-right-time anchor with his defensive rotations. You'd love to see more scoring range and blocks, but you're also blown away by what he's already providing as a 22-year-old.

With Detroit holding matching rights, it's hard to picture the Pistons letting Duren get away. The question is more whether they'll max him out themselves or let someone else do it, knowing they'll be able to match. Assuming Detroit has a deep playoff run, look for the front office to try keeping the good times rolling by paying him max money itself.

Prediction: The Pistons re-sign Duren to a five-year, $200 million deal.

LeBron James, SF, Unrestricted

2 of 3
Brooklyn Nets v Los Angeles Lakers

Despite James turning 41 in December, his numbers have held impressively steady. There's some drop-off, sure, but he's still sitting on a sweet stat line: 20.9 points, 7.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds per outing.

He should expect to see a steeper decline in his pay rate, though. He's collecting a whopping $52.6 million salary this season, per Spotrac, and he almost certainly isn't signing for anything close to that. And that's assuming, of course, that he signs anything and doesn't simply opt for retirement.

"When I know, you guys will know," James told reporters about his plans. "I don't know. I have no idea. I just want to live, that's all."

If James keeps playing, his market won't be enormous. He just wouldn't make sense in a lot of places. That said, those interested figure to be very interested. Staying with the Los Angeles Lakers feels more possible than it did earlier this season, but you could also see him heading back for a final go-round with the Cleveland Cavaliers, sharing a locker room with Stephen Curry on the Golden State Warriors or even embracing the Big Apple for a quick spin with the New York Knicks.

Predicton: James signs a one-year, $15 million deal with the Cavaliers.

Austin Reaves, SG, Player Option

3 of 3
Los Angeles Lakers v Detroit Pistons

There aren't many free agents who have a shot at back-burnering LeBron James. When it comes to the Lakers, though, you'd have to imagine their first priority is not a short-term commitment with the King but rather a long-term agreement with their breakout guard.

Reaves didn't make his All-Star debut this season, but his numbers are among the richest you'll find among NBA non-stars: 23.5 points, 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds. The 27-year-old can absolutely fill it up with three-level scoring, and when he's asked to create offense for others, he has shown that part of his bag, too.

Defense is not a strength (to put it politely), and his three-ball is more good than great, but he is borderline elite at the offensive end. And despite approaching his 28th birthday, he still has a chance to improve, since this is only his fifth NBA season.

The Lakers aren't letting go of a shooting star like this. Once he declines his $14.9 million player option, expect him to quickly circle back to L.A. on a max deal.

Prediction: Reaves re-signs with the Lakers for five years and $241 million.
