SGA Laughs Off Making His Own NBA MVP Case After Wemby Spoke Out in New Trending Video
Reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder declined to state his 2025-26 MVP case following OKC's 114-110 win over the Detroit Pistons on Monday night.
When asked if he wanted to go on record about why he deserves to be MVP, Gilgeous-Alexander laughed before saying, "Nah, I'm good. Thanks for asking, though. … I let my game do the talking."
SGA did not take the same opportunity as San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, who recently broke down why he feels he is MVP-worthy.
Speaking to reporters last week, Wemby listed his defensive prowess and the Spurs' dominance of the Thunder as reasons why he should be heavily considered for MVP.
"My first one would be that defense is 50 percent of the game and that it is undervalued so far in the MVP race. I believe I'm the most impactful player defensively in the league," Wembanyama said. "Second argument would be that we almost swept OKC in the season, and we dominated them three times with their real team. ... The third argument would be that offense impact is not just points."
The 22-year-old Wembanyama is undoubtedly having a spectacular season, averaging 24.5 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 3.1 blocks, 1.9 three-pointers made and 1.1 steals per game.
He is the runaway favorite for NBA Defensive Player of the Year honors, and he has the Spurs in second place in the Western Conference at 57-18 on the heels of San Antonio having missed the playoffs in six consecutive seasons.
As for Gilgeous-Alexander, he is averaging 31.6 points, 6.5 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 1.7 three-pointers made and 1.4 steals per game, which is right on par with the numbers he put up last season en route to his first NBA MVP Award.
SGA, who also led the Thunder to an NBA championship and won NBA Finals MVP honors last season, once again has OKC atop the league.
At 60-16, the Thunder boast the NBA's best record, 2.5 games ahead of Wembanyama and the Spurs.
While it is true that the Spurs are 4-1 against the Thunder this season, it speaks to how dominant OKC has been otherwise that it is still multiple games ahead of the Spurs in the standings.
Gilgeous-Alexander and Wembanyama are arguably the two front-runners for NBA MVP this season with Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Dončić also in the mix, and the result of the voting could add another layer to the budding rivalry between OKC and San Antonio.
