Viral Irish Rugby Player Reveals CFB Commitment Despite Never Playing Football Before
South Carolina has landed one of the most unique college football prospects in this year's recruiting cycle.
Per The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, 20-year-old Irish rugby player and offensive line prospect Neff Giwa has committed to the Gamecocks and will sign on Sunday.
Giwa, who stands at 6'7" and 295 pounds, made headlines earlier this month after a three-second video of him doing drills went viral. Brandon Collier, who runs Germany-based Premier Prospects International (PPI), posted the video that led to Giwa receiving scholarships from top programs all across the country.
Despite never playing a down of regulation football, Giwa received offers from Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, SMU and more after the video caught the attention of coaches.
According to Feldman, Giwa was impressed by the background of South Carolina offensive line coach Randy Clements, who helped develop German lineman Sebastian Vollmer when both were at Houston. Clements also helped former hockey player Danny Watkins become a first-round pick after his time at Baylor.
Clements will now look to make Giwa his next NFL protégé with an atypical background.
