Lakers' LeBron James Talks Scoreless 1st Half vs. Pistons in Video, 'It's The Role That I'm Playing'
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James provided some context Monday night regarding a rare occurrence during L.A.'s 113-110 loss to the Detroit Pistons.
James did not score any points in the first half, marking only the third time that has happened in his career, and the first time since 2010.
Speaking to reporters about the anomaly, James said, "It's the role that I'm playing for the ball club. In order for us to win ball games, it's the role that I'm playing. And that's just how the game was going."
The 41-year-old James went on to score all 12 of his points in the second half, and he fell just shy of a triple-double with 10 assists and nine rebounds as well.
Los Angeles trailed by 13 points at halftime on the strength of a 42-point outburst by the Pistons in the second quarter.
The Lakers roared back in the third to back it a two-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, but they were unable to complete the comeback despite the Pistons being without their top player in superstar guard Cade Cunningham.
As has been the case throughout the season, the NBA's leading scorer, Luka Dončić, led the way for the Lakers on Monday with a game-high 32 points.
Over the course of stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Lakers, LeBron has always been the offensive engine, but that simply hasn't been the case this season in L.A.'s first full year with Dončić on the roster.
James has fallen into an unfamiliar complementary role, and as a result, his 21.1 points per game represent his lowest scoring average since his rookie year in 2003-04.
While it is strange to see the NBA's all-time leading scorer taking a backseat, it is hard to argue too much with the results.
At 46-26, the Lakers are third in the Western Conference, placing them behind only arguably the two top championship contenders in the NBA in the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.
James could always step to the forefront and take on a greater scoring burden come playoff time, but it terms of getting the Lakers where they need to be, LeBron has been effective in his role so far this season.
