A 3-Team Trade Idea to Find the Perfect Home for Michael Porter Jr.

Grant HughesMar 27, 2026

We'll need the results of a Charlotte Hornets playoff run to fully appreciate the needs for one of this season's great up-and-coming teams, but we already know for certain that Michael Porter Jr. just wasted a career year with the Brooklyn Nets.

Here, we'll cook up a three-team trade to get MPJ to a place where his scoring talents will actually matter while also addressing what seems like the high-scoring Hornets' biggest lineup hole.

Before all nine of you Nets fans out there start shouting about how Porter Jr.'s efficient 24.2 points per game will matter next year because your team doesn't control its 2027 first-rounder and won't be tanking, let's be clear about something: Brooklyn's talent level remains so low as to already eliminate it from playoff contention next year. Even if the Nets don't try to lose games on purpose going forward, they'll be bad enough to lose a ton organically.

Porter Jr. deserves better, as do the offensively challenged Detroit Pistons. Let's link those two up while also turning the Hornets into a terrifying two-way force.

The Trade

Los Angeles Lakers v Detroit Pistons

Detroit Pistons Acquire: Michael Porter Jr., 2026 first-round pick (via CHA)

Charlotte Hornets Acquire: Ausar Thompson, Paul Reed

Brooklyn Nets Acquire: Miles Bridges, Duncan Robinson, 2027 first-round pick (most favorable of CHA/DAL)

Why Detroit Does It

Brooklyn Nets v Detroit Pistons

Daniss Jenkins is doing that thing again, where he thrives when Cade Cunningham misses time, but don't let his career-high 30 points against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 23rd fool you. The Pistons still desperately need more scoring and spacing threats to truly profile as a contender.

Porter Jr. flashed never-before-seen creation skills with Brooklyn this season, adding a layer to an offensive game previously defined by spot-up sniping and minimal dribbling. The Pistons wouldn't necessarily need him to generate his own looks like the Nets did this year, but they'd happily take a bit of creation along with MPJ's five-alarm fire outside shooting.

Porter Jr. is a career 39.8 percent shooter on over 2,500 career attempts since joining the league in 2019-20. In that span, only Stephen Curry and Zach LaVine have been more accurate on volume that high.

MPJ could slot into Tobias Harris' spot in the lineup, offering elite scoring and underrated defense in the frontcourt, while adding a new and dangerous dimension to the Pistons' attack. It might be enough to put them over the top as 2027 title threats.

Throw in a 2026 first from Charlotte (if we assume this deal goes down on draft night) to offset the pain of losing Thompson and all his long-term potential, and Detroit comes out of this one feeling pretty good.

Why Charlotte Does It

Charlotte Hornets v Detroit Pistons

The Hornets have the NBA's best offensive lineup (minimum 300 possessions) in LaMelo Ball, Kon Knueppel, Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges and Moussa Diabate. That group's 136.7 offensive rating is unthinkably high, and it's actually been just fine defensively as well.

It's still hard to avoid thinking that the best version of the fast-rising Hornets should feature a top-end defender to complement all that explosive scoring.

Thompson has produced exceptional block and steal rates throughout his career. He is among the best rebounding wings in the sport and has graded out as a 99th-percentile defender according to Defensive Estimated Plus/Minus in each of the last two seasons. Simply put, he is an on-ball menace that can guard at least four positions while also wreaking havoc as a helper.

You could argue a handful of versatile wing defenders are in his league, one being his twin brother, Amen Thompson, but good luck making the case that any of them are better.

Charlotte is going to need a vice-grip stopper to shield Ball, Knueppel and Miller from the toughest matchups, and Thompson can absolutely fill that role. As a bonus, his severe shooting limitations will matter less in an offense as varied and dynamic as this one. Better still, his speed and force in transition could add an even more dangerous element to what the Hornets already do so well.

Bridges, whom Thompson would replace, is a middling scorer who has never been regarded as a passable defender. If Charlotte is going to take up residence in the contender class for 2026-27, his spot in the lineup is the one that needs improving.

For the assets, of course!

The Nets might not rate among the league's most unabashed tankers next season, but they're still going to stink because they're led by a horde of young players who are just beginning to learn on the job.

Bridges' expiring $23 million salary comes with the most favorable of either the Hornets' or Dallas Mavericks' 2027 first-rounder. Because Charlotte's fate is tied to the health of Ball and Miller, that pick might have more upside than it seems. And if Dallas can't get its legs underneath it next year, it's easy to imagine this selection landing in the lottery.

Duncan Robinson would be flippable to a contender in need of shooting at the 2027 deadline. Only $2 million of his $15.9 million salary for 2026-27 is guaranteed. He could easily be worth a quality second-rounder or even a late first if he shoots the ball well enough.

It's hard to imagine the Nets prioritizing an extension for Porter Jr., whose deal expires after the 2026-27 season. Though Brooklyn could hold onto him in hopes of a deadline deal next February, the return will be better if it moves Porter Jr. this summer so his acquiring team can benefit from a full year of production.
