MLB Documentary 'Homecoming: The Tokyo Series' with Shohei Ohtani, More Stars Drops on CNN Streaming
Baseball fans will get an intimate look at last year's battle between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs to open the 2025 MLB season.
Beginning Friday, CNN will exclusively stream Homecoming: The Tokyo Series in the CNN app, a documentary that profiled not only the stars taking part in the two-game set but also followers of the sport in Japan.
"MLB's Tokyo Series reminds us that baseball's borders keep expanding, and this film is about what happens when a game becomes a culture," director Jason Sterman said. "From master craftsmen to Little League families, the people we filmed in Japan don't just play baseball, they've transformed it into something deeply their own. It's a story that transcends sport, and CNN Films has always known how to bring stories like this to audiences."

The Tokyo Series featured five Japanese-born players, none bigger than the Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani. Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shota Imanaga started the first game for Los Angeles and Chicago, respectively. The Dodgers then turned to Roki Sasaki for Game 2. Seiya Suzuki was the Cubs' designated hitter for both contests.
Los Angeles took the two games.
Ohtani was a standout performer. He went 2-for-5 with two runs scored in Los Dodgers' 4-1 win and homered in their 6-3 victory.
The showcase was a massive financial triumph for MLB, setting multiple records in Japan.
Given its success on multiple fronts, the Tokyo Series will likely be part of the league calendar again before too long.
