Kevin Durant Addresses NBA Retirement Timeline After Passing Michael Jordan on NBA Scoring List

Doric SamMar 22, 2026

In his 18th season in the NBA, Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant is still performing at a high level, but he knows the end is near.

After passing the legendary Michael Jordan for fifth place on the all-time scoring list in Saturday's 123-122 win over the Miami Heat, Durant spoke with his business partner and Boardroom co-founder Rich Kleiman, and he admitted that retirement has crossed his mind at this stage of his career.

"There's gonna come a time when it's not my place, and we're creeping closer to that," Durant said around the 21:04 mark. "And it's crazy to think about as the season winds down... This is what I spent all my life doing, every day. This is a part of my routine. This is what I center my life around, is the game. So, to know that, having a handful of years, hopefully, left to do this, gotta start getting prepared for that next phase."

Durant dropped 27 points against the Heat and now has 32,294 points in his career, two more than Jordan.

At 37 years old, Durant hasn't lost a step. He's appeared in 67 games for the Rockets and is averaging 25.7 points while shooting 51.7 percent from the field and 40.8 percent from three-point range.

It appears that Durant still has a lot left in the tank, but his eventual retirement will mark the end of an era. For now, fans will continue to enjoy watching him climb the scoring list before he calls it a career.

Durant and the Rockets (43-27) will be in action on Monday night against the Chicago Bulls (28-42).
