Victor Wembanyama Reacts to Game-Winner vs. Suns to Clinch NBA Playoff Spot, 'I Was Getting Mobbed'

In a season full of MVP-caliber moments, Victor Wembanyama had another one on Thursday night when he hit the game-winning shot against the Phoenix Suns to help the San Antonio Spurs clinch their first postseason berth since the 2018-19 season.

After hitting a jumper with 1.1 seconds remaining to give the Spurs a 101-100 win, Wembanyama told reporters "I was getting mobbed" by teammates as he was trying to take in the weight of the moment.

"It was hard to take in all the stimulus around me," said Wembanyama. "I had the fans looking at me. I had this guy spill wine on me. There was a lot going on. I didn't see all my teammates come up for a second, so I felt like I was getting mobbed."

The mobbing extended beyond his teammates, as Wembanyama had wine spilled on his shorts by a fan sitting at courtside who was celebrating his go-ahead shot.

Wembanyama finished with 34 points on 10-of-20 shooting, 12 rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes. It was his 14th game of the season scoring at least 30 points, with four of them coming since March 5.

The Spurs have been arguably the biggest surprise in the NBA this season. They were thought to be a fringe playoff contender coming into the year, but few would have expected them to be the second team to clinch a postseason berth and have an outside shot at the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

Wembanyama is the main driving force behind San Antonio's success. The 22-year-old is averaging 24.3 points on 50.6 percent shooting, 11.1 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.9 assists per game in 55 appearances.

San Antonio's 52 wins so far this season are its most since the 2016-17 season (61-21). That was also the last time the franchise won a playoff series, advancing to the Western Conference Finals before losing to the Golden State Warriors.

If Wembanyama continues to play at this level going into the playoffs, it wouldn't be a shock to see the Spurs get back to the conference finals this season.
