Heat's Official Scorer Jokes He Got Cramps Documenting Bam Adebayo's Historic 83-Point Game
Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo's historic 83-point game last week wasn't easy for the person tasked with documenting his statistics.
While speaking to The Athletic's Fred Katz, Heat official scorer Jamie Carrig joked that he felt his hand cramping in the third quarter.
"I need a reliever," Carrig cheekily told Heat media relations veteran Rob Wilson in the moment.
Carrig has served as Miami's official scorer for the past four seasons after working on the team's stats crew since the franchise was founded in 1988. He had to log every single one of the 83 points Adebayo scored in a win against the Washington Wizards, which is the second-highest point total for a single player in NBA history behind only Wilt Chamberlain's legendary 100-point game.
"I had to make sure to hydrate," Carrig joked to Katz.
Despite the advent of technology, the NBA has stuck with the old-school method of logging official statistics by hand. Carrig noted that Adebayo's record-setting 43 free-throw attempts were particularly strenuous to document on the score sheet.
"(I got) no ice bath afterwards," Carrig said. "But I thought about putting (my hand) in the ice cream cooler in the back where we have our dining."
Still, experiencing Adebayo's historic performance up-close is something that Carrig will never forget.
"I was there writing stuff in the book and thinking, 'This is history that's happening," Carrig said. "It's surreal."
