New LeBron James Rumors on Lakers Star's Future amid NBA Retirement, Free-Agency Buzz
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is tentatively expected to suit up for at least one more season, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Charania reported Monday on Get Up that's the sense "around James" and the NBA as a whole:
The 22-time All-Star is a free agent in the summer.
When picking up his option with the Lakers last June, his agent made what some thought was a thinly veiled trade request, or at least a reference to one. It quickly became apparent that his trade market was pretty limited, and he remained in L.A.
On the open market, James will have the luxury of picking whatever destination he prefers, though that might require him to take a massive pay cut from his current $52.6 million salary.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst floated the idea of a return to Northeast Ohio, where the surefire Hall of Famer can bring his career full circle with the Cleveland Cavaliers:
James' reputation speaks for itself, but his performance in 2025-26 will go a long way toward enticing a contender to sign him. He's averaging 21.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 7.0 assists through 46 appearances. Most importantly, his usage rate is at a career-low 27.8 percent, according to Basketball Reference.
LeBron hasn't become a peripheral figure for the Lakers, but he has settled into a slightly lesser role alongside Luka Dončić. That will be encouraging for any suitors who hope he can slot into a lineup that already includes one or two established stars.
James has so far resisted every chance to leave Los Angeles despite the team often hitting a firm ceiling in the playoffs.
If history repeats itself, then he might give more serious consideration to wrapping up his run in a different setting.
