Los Angeles and Denver have been battling for positioning in the Western Conference, with the win giving the Lakers sole possession of third place at 42-25 during a tight top-six race with Houston, Minnesota and Denver. The victory also extended Los Angeles' winning streak to five games.
The Lakers and Rockets will face off twice next week in a pair of pivotal matchups that could shape the conference standings.
On Saturday, Dončić finished with a triple-double, recording 30 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists to help lift the Lakers. His strong night followed a hot first half in which he tallied 16 points, six rebounds, eight assists and a block.
Dončić entered the game riding momentum from a 51-point performance — his highest-scoring game with Los Angeles — in a 142-130 win over Chicago on Thursday.
James added 17 points along with six rebounds, five assists and two steals after scoring 13 by halftime. The 41-year-old returned Thursday from a three-game absence due to foot, elbow and hip injuries.
Four of the Lakers' five starters finished in double figures in an impressive all-around performance. Austin Reaves led all scorers with 32 points, Marcus Smart added 21, and Deandre Ayton finished with nine after a big overtime stretch as the Lakers' starters stepped up in the victory.
The Lakers held a 61-50 lead at the break after a dominant 34-point opening quarter, with Dončić posting 16 points and eight assists. Jokić led the Nuggets at halftime with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Denver battled back in the third quarter, erupting for 27 points to tie the game heading into the final frame.
The Nuggets grabbed the lead early in the fourth and held it for most of the quarter as the Lakers began to feel the pressure of the comeback.
Dončić tied the game at 109 with under two minutes left, and the teams traded baskets late. Tim Hardaway Jr. hit a three and Jokić added a key block, but Reaves answered with a floater off an intentional missed free throw to force overtime.
Ayton delivered a big overtime stretch with two rebounds, four points and a block before Dončić scored his first points of the extra period to put the Lakers ahead by two with 0.5 seconds remaining and sealing the victory with a block.
Despite 24 points from Jokić, 27 from Aaron Gordon and 20 from Hardaway Jr. off the bench, the Nuggets could not find enough to secure the win. Denver will look to bounce back Tuesday at home against the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Lakers will head to Houston to face Kevin Durant and the Rockets in back-to-back decisive matchups Monday and Wednesday.
