College Football Teams With Best Shot to Go Undefeated in 2026

Brad ShepardMar 17, 2026

In today's age of super conferences and mega out-of-league showdowns, it's not very often that you have an undefeated team. That's one reason why what the Indiana Hoosiers did last year was so special.

Closing out a spotless schedule is really, really hard, and though most of the teams on this list hail from the Big Ten and SEC, those are obviously the toughest conferences to do it in.

You've got to have tons of talent and lots of luck.

So, which teams have the best shots at doing it in 2026? For some of these on the list, the struggle is going to be surviving a rugged regular season. For those who get to cruise a little through the scheduled slate, the College Football Playoff could be a reality check.

Regardless, these are the teams we think have a shot to have a goose egg in the loss column as the season closes. Some of them may surprise you.

Georgia Bulldogs

Kirby Smart's fantastic formula in Athens focuses on elite recruiting, and then Georgia comes back and sprinkles in a few quality transfer portal additions.

It works to the tune of big wins, but the Bulldogs haven't hoisted the trophy at the end of the season since going back-to-back Natties in '21 and '22. They've been one-and-done in the College Football Playoffs the past two years and finished 12-2 last year.

Still, there's just too much talent to write off UGA.

Savvy veteran quarterback Gunner Stockton is back, and the running back tandem of Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens can take the pressure off him. The defense is just full of dynamic athletes, as Smart replenished a depleted secondary with portal additions.

The biggest question mark is in the receiving corps, which will boast plenty of new faces after losing five of the top six pass-catchers (only London Humphreys returns). Stockton's weapon closet may be a process to get up to speed, but if the Dawgs can find some playmakers, the sky's the limit once again.

Indiana Hoosiers

Last season's 16-0 national championship run was magical, and the first gridiron title in school history will be one to remember for eons.

Perhaps repeating the feat would be an even greater accomplishment for coach Curt Cignetti.

The Hoosiers must replace superstars on both sides of the ball like Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, running backs Roman Hemby and Kaelon Black, receivers Omar Cooper Jr. and Elijah Sarratt, and a group of defenders who'll be drafted.

The '26 rendition of IU is going to look a lot different with TCU veteran transfer signal-caller Josh Hoover at the helm, former Boston College running back Turbo Richard, former Michigan State receiver Nick Marsh, and Tulane's Shazz Preston joining Charlie Becker.

There are great players on offense and defense. Cignetti is going to get them all to play together and gel. But going undefeated again? That's a tall task, especially with regular-season games against Ohio State, Michigan, USC, and Washington.

The best news, though, is that the toughies are on the back-end of the schedule. Watch out. By then, IU will be a cohesive unit.

LSU Tigers

The LSU Tigers didn't just go out and pay a fortune to steal Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss and then empty the bank on the transfer portal to "take a step forward" from last year's frustrating 7-6 season that saw Brian Kelly fired.

They want to win and win big right away.

Kiffin has been a portal whisperer during his time in Oxford, finding the right formula with the new pieces he brought in year after year. Now, he's going to have to do the same thing on the Bayou.

Make no mistake, though: This Bayou Bengals roster now is as talented as any in the nation.

Portal additions like quarterback Sam Leavitt, offensive tackle Jordan Seaton, safeties Ty Benefield and Faheem Delane, edge Princewill Umanmielen, receivers Winston Watkins, Tre Brown III, and Eugene "Trey" Wilson III, as well as edge-rusher Jordan Ross, are just incredible additions.

When you put them with the key pieces the Tigers kept around and a loaded recruiting class, there are puzzle pieces scattered about. If Kiffin puts them together quickly, it could spell a title.

Miami Hurricanes

College Football Playoff National Championship: Miami v Indiana

After controversially making it in the College Football Playoff over Notre Dame a year ago, Miami proved it belonged with a dominant defensive run all the way to the championship game.

That felt like a springboard to annual contention for coach Mario Cristobal's program.

Now, the 'Canes went out and got the best transfer portal quarterback available (arguably) in Duke's Darian Mensah to throw to Malachi Toney and a bunch of portal receivers like Cooper Barkate (Duke), Vandrevius Jacobs (South Carolina), and Cam Vaughn (West Virginia).

Mensah is the X-factor that makes Miami a top-tier program again, but the biggest question mark is who will replace Reuben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor on the edges. Missouri transfer Damon Wilson is a huge start.

With Corey Hetherman leading the defense, the 'Canes should be excited about all the talent on that side of the ball and finding a mix that can be exceptional.

If the defense comes together, this Miami offense can be explosive with Mensah throwing to several receiving stars and getting strong production from the team leader at running back Mark Fletcher Jr.

Don't be surprised to see them run the table.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 29 Notre Dame at Stanford

Let's get one thing out of the way: There's nothing OK with Notre Dame essentially taking its ball and going home when it was left out of the College Football Playoff last year.

The Fighting Irish were left out of the final 12, so they sat out the postseason.

They won't have that worry this year. The bet here is the Irish make it to the playoffs, and they may just go unbeaten, as well. With redshirt sophomore quarterback CJ Carr coming back and a ton of receiving weapons, the Irish passing game should be strong.

It's going to be quite the chore replacing a generational running back tandem in Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, but coach Marcus Freeman has brought in plenty of talent.

The defense may be as good as any in the nation, too, led by an elite secondary.

Games against Wisconsin, BYU, Miami, and SMU are far from a sure thing, but this is far from a gauntlet. It's feasible Notre Dame could be unbeaten heading into the November 7 tilt with the Hurricanes, and that game is already going to be exciting. It could be extremely meaningful, too.

Ohio State Buckeyes

College Football Playoff Quarterfinal - Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic: Miami v Ohio State

The Big Ten continues to prove every year that it's now the best league in the nation, and it's closing ranks on the SEC as being the deepest, too. It's not there yet, but teams that come out of that conference unscathed have put in some work.

That's what makes what Indiana did in '25 even more exceptional.

Along the way, the Hoosiers barely beat Ohio State 13-10 in a game that could have gone either way, and the Buckeyes expect to be right back in the mix again in '26.

At Texas on September 12 will be an early-season litmus test, and showdowns at Iowa, Indiana, USC, and home games against Oregon and Michigan give the Buckeyes arguably the nation's toughest schedule on paper.

Still, you can't do this list without the Buckeyes. Heisman Trophy finalist Julian Sayin returns under center, and the best player in the nation – receiver Jeremiah Smith – is back, too. Weapons all over the field on both sides of the ball make Ryan Day's squad a contender every year.

OSU is just a year removed from a title, and it has the horses to do it again.

Oregon Ducks

College Football Playoff Quarterfinal - Capital One Orange Bowl: Oregon v Texas Tech

There are a lot of people out there wondering, with all the talent he's stockpiled, just when coach Dan Lanning is going to break through at Oregon.

The answer may very well be 2026.

The Ducks were dealt a major curveball when they had to replace both coordinators after they left to be head coaches (defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi to Cal and offensive coordinator Will Stein to Kentucky), but this group of players has explosive potential.

It's possible quarterback Dante Moore could have overtaken Fernando Mendoza as the top pick in the draft had he come out, but he'd be the second signal-caller taken at the very least. But he's back for another year in Eugene, and he leads a dynamic bunch on offense.

Receiver Evan Stewart didn't play in '26, so he returns to lead a deep and talented unit, and Lanning restocked a running back room that got incredibly shallow in the playoffs.

Defensively, Oregon made one of the shrewdest portal moves by getting Minnesota defensive back Koi Perich. There are NFL stars all over that group, with eight or nine of them who will play at the next level.

Texas Longhorns

8 of 10
Oklahoma v Texas

Everybody knew it early on, and so did coach Steve Sarkisian: Texas didn't have enough offensive firepower to live up to massive expectations in 2025.

The Longhorns do now.

After a sputtering start to last year doomed Arch Manning and the 'Horns, Sark and Co. went out in the transfer portal and added the biggest prize in receiver Cam Coleman, stole running back Hollywood Smothers from Alabama, and grabbed fellow backfield mate Raleek Brown from Arizona State.

Receiver Sterling Berkhalter (Wake Forest) and tight end Michael Masunas (Michigan State) shouldn't be overlooked, either.

A veteran defensive stalwart like linebacker Rasheem Biles is only going to fortify a deep and talented group left behind by Pete Kwiatkowski for new coordinator Will Muschamp, who has spent the past few years helping Georgia's defense.

Muschamp is no stranger to the 'Horns, and both sides of the ball should be elite. This may be the best team in the SEC.

Texas Tech Red Raiders

9 of 10
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 01 College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl Oregon vs Texas Tech

Failing to play a deep schedule filled with quality teams likely hurt Texas Tech when it reached the College Football Playoff last year and ran into Oregon, but don't scoff at the Red Raiders just yet.

This team is built for the long haul again as they're throwing around lots of greenbacks in Lubbock when it comes to transfer portal additions.

Coach Joey McGuire is bringing in some top-tier high school talent, too, and that could spell big things for the Red Raiders as they try to build a title contender every year and a roster that has some developmental pieces, too.

Last year, the team's strength was its front seven – largely built through the portal – and they've gone with that blueprint again, fortifying the front with Mateen Iborgba (Wake Forest), Adam Trick (Miami-Ohio), Jojo Johnson (Oregon State), Bryce Butler (Washington), and edge-rushers Amarie Fleming (Allen) and Trey White (San Diego State).

Really, though, TTU is loaded all over the place after portal additions. The biggest splash is quarterback Brendan Sorsby (Cincinnati), but they also added weaponry in the receiving corps like Malcolm Simmons (Auburn), Donte Lee Jr. (Liberty), Kenny Johnson (Pittsburgh), and Jalen Jones (Alabama State), as well as tight end Jett Carpenter (Nevada).

That's a lot of personnel mentions, but it's going to be a matter of getting all of them to gel together. The Red Raiders' toughest opponents are Houston, Arizona, and Arizona State, and they're more talented than all three.

It's tough to find a loss on that schedule.

Utah Utes

10 of 10
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 31 SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl Nebraska vs Utah

It's a lot less likely for Utah to finish undefeated than most of the teams on here – especially with new coach Morgan Scalley taking over for Kyle Whittingham after being an assistant there.

But there is a lot of offensive firepower for the Utes remaining, even if they've got some holes to fill.

A lot of talent left for Michigan, where Wittingham landed, but the two-headed quarterback monster of Devon Dampier Jr. and Byrd Ficklin will keep Utah in every game, and running back Wayshawn Parker is back, too.

The Utes are going to have a difficult time replacing the all-star offensive tackle duo of Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu, who helped pave the way for some of those strong offenses, but the Utes are still a good team.

Can they go unbeaten, though? A road trip to Arkansas in the early season won't be easy, but games against Houston, BYU, Arizona, and West Virginia are all winnable.

It remains to be seen if Utah can run the table or hang with (probably) Texas Tech in a Big 12 title game, but there are some key pieces in place for a special season in Salt Lake City.
