Rashan Gary Traded to Cowboys from Packers, Updated List of NFL Draft Picks & Salary Cap

The Dallas Cowboys found a trade partner in the Green Bay Packers for the second offseason in a row.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys sent a 2027 fourth-round draft pick to the Packers to acquire pass-rusher Rashan Gary, who had fueled speculation about his eventual departure from Green Bay with a deleted farewell announcement before free agency.

The Cowboys already own the Packers' 2027 first-round pick along with their own, though the higher pick will be sent to the New York Jets as part of last season's Quinnen Williams trade. Per Spotrac, Dallas had seven selections in the 2027 draft, but after Monday's deal with Green Bay, that number is down to six.

Gary was originally projected to count $19.5 million against the salary cap in 2026, but he agreed to a pay cut that included an option and void years, lowering his cap number to $5.4 million this season and $8.2 million in 2027. Per Spotrac, the Cowboys now have $18.9 million in cap room. Dallas has made modest moves in free agency so far, such as signing safety Jalen Thompson, cornerback Cobie Durant and backup quarterback Sam Howell.

It was late last offseason when the Cowboys sent star edge rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers in a blockbuster trade for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round draft picks. Dallas' pass-rush took a major hit from Parsons' departure, as the team ranked in the bottom-half of the league with just 35 total sacks in 2025.

The addition of Gary should add more juice to the Cowboys' pass-rush, as he racked up 7.5 sacks for the second straight year and has 46.5 sacks over his seven-year career.

The No. 12 pick in the 2019 NFL draft, Gary led Green Bay in sacks in 2023 and 2024. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke glowingly about Gary at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month, so it's a bit of a surprise that the team chose to ship him away.

"He was impactful towards the second half of the season, maybe not as much as he was in the first, but he was impactful," Gutekunst said, per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. "And Rashan's got all the talent in the world, and he's produced at a high level for us since he's been here, and we would expect that next year, as well."

Instead, Gary will now have the chance to make an impact for the Cowboys, who have fallen short of the playoffs in each of the last two years.
