Russell Wilson Reflects on Sean Payton Conflict in Video, 'Just Don't Disrespect Me'

Doric SamMar 3, 2026

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson is known for his calm demeanor, but he won't hesitate to fight back when he feels attacked.

During an appearance on Bussin' With The Boys, Wilson opened up about his fiery response to Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton this past season after comments that he felt were disrespectful.

"I don't say much. I never, hardly say anything. I think there's a time and place. But sometimes you get fatigued of people talking about you," Wilson said. "We're all human. It's one thing for people who aren't in the field, or bots or whatever, talking. I don't worry about that stuff. But to me, when you've been in the ring, or you've been on the same side, and I got the same amount of rings as you got, meaning Sean. Listen, I got a lot of respect for him as a play-caller, this and that. But to take a shot, I don't like, I don't think it's necessary, especially when I'm not on your own team anymore."

Wilson is set to become a free agent after spending the 2025 season with the New York Giants. He and Payton had a failed relationship during their brief time together in Denver, and the coach appeared to shade the signal-caller while praising rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart in October, saying, "They found a little spark with that quarterback. I was talking to John Mara not too long ago, and I said we were hoping that that change would've happened long after our game."

Wilson responded on social media and called Payton "classless" while also referring to the infamous bounty hunting scandal.

Wilson went on to add that he's past the point of remaining cordial in the face of belittlement.

"For me, I've realized I've stayed quiet for so long. There's a time and place where I'm not," he said. "I know who I am as a competitor, as a warrior, as a champion, too. I've beaten Sean, too. We've been in the same place and the same thing, so it's not a matter of disrespect, just don't disrespect me."
