Celtics' Jayson Tatum Tells Doctor He Won't Return as 'Role Player' in Video Amid Injury Rehab

Scott PolacekMar 2, 2026

Jayson Tatum plans on being Jayson Tatum when he returns from his ruptured Achilles injury.

During the third episode of The Quiet Work, which is the documentary chronicling the Boston Celtics star's return from the injury he suffered in last season's playoffs, orthopedic surgeon Martin O'Malley said, "I'm confident you're going to go back and be Jayson Tatum just like you were before" (3:20 mark).

Tatum responded by saying, "Ain't come back to be no role player, doc."

That the doctor was so confident in Tatum's ability to return and be his normal self on the court is welcome news for the six-time All-Star and the Celtics.

After all, he is one of the best players in the league when healthy and has a resume with a championship, five All-NBA selections and the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals MVP to back it up.

He also finished in the top six in MVP voting in each of the last four seasons, including in 2024-25 when he averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from deep.

While there is no set return date yet, the latest comments in the documentary suggest he will return at some point this season.

So does last week's report from ESPN's Shams Charania that said Tatum "is a full go in five-on-five scrimmages with the Celtics. Right now it's about him putting together a number of practices and scrimmages to build up his conditioning and increase the strength in both of his calves."

That Boston is 40-20 and in second place in the Eastern Conference will likely contribute to the decision about whether he will return or not as well. If the team was struggling without him and outside the playoff picture, he would likely be more focused on next season.

Yet it has a chance to be a true contender in the playoffs, especially if he resembles the player he was prior to his injury.

Many likely doubted the Celtics' chances to be a force in the Eastern Conference this season with Tatum sidelined and the offseason decisions to trade away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis, but they have far exceeded expectations with Jaylen Brown leading the way.

If Tatum returns, it will only elevate their already high ceiling for the playoffs.
