James Harden Talks Potential Timeline for NBA Retirement on Video After Cavs' Win vs. Nets

Andrew PetersMar 2, 2026

James Harden is still settling into his new home with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the veteran guard isn't ignoring the fact that retirement is creeping up on him.

After downing his former team, the Brooklyn Nets, the 36-year-old Harden gave his thoughts on retirement.

"I know it's coming soon. Hopefully, later than soon, but it's a reality," he said. "Everybody has to go through this at some point. Just trying to continue to keep my body in shape and play well. We'll see what happens in the next few years. Take one game at a time and cherish the moments."

Luckily for Harden, he seems plenty capable of playing a few more seasons. He's putting up 24.5 points per game this year — his most since the 2020-21 campaign — while adding 8.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game.

He posted 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in Sunday's win.

Before Harden calls it a career, he's hoping to add the one thing missing from his resume: a championship. The Cavs, who have gone 7-1 since trading for Harden, certainly seem capable of making a Finals run this year.
