LeBron James Moves into 5th Place for Most Assists in Lakers History, Who Did NBA Legend Pass?

Andrew PetersMar 1, 2026

LeBron James will likely be remembered most for his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he's made quite the mark on the Los Angeles Lakers' franchise history books.

On Sunday, James moved into fifth place on the Lakers' all-time assists list, surpassing Michael Cooper.

If James plays for the Lakers next season, he'll likely pass Norm Nixon, who sits in fourth place with 3,846, but it seems unlikely that he'll catch Jerry West for third place before he retires.

While James has spent the latter half of his career in Los Angeles, he's already 10th all-time on the team's points list as well. He's been one of the team's most iconic players in recent history, winning a title in 2020, so it won't be a surprise if the Lakers decide to hang his jersey in the rafters when he retires.

But James is far from done making an impact for the Lakers. The 41-year-old is putting up 21.5 points, 7.0 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game this year, proving to be a valuable contributor despite being the oldest player in the league.

Whether James will return for another season, and if he'll stay with the Lakers is still to be determined, but he certainly seems capable of playing another year.

The Lakers have hit a bit of a rough patch as of late, losing five of their last eight games, but they're still sitting in sixth place in the West at 35-24.
