Zach Edey to Undergo Surgery on Ankle Injury, Updated Timeline for Return to Grizzlies

Zach Edey is set to undergo another ankle surgery.

The Memphis Grizzlies announced Sunday that the big man "will undergo surgery to resolve ongoing discomfort and talar bone stress in his left ankle" after he previously underwent surgery on June 10.

"Edey is expected to make a full recovery, and a timeline will be provided following the surgery," the announcement read.

The No. 9 overall pick of the 2024 NBA draft wasted little time making an impression in the league as an All-Rookie First Team selection while averaging 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game and shooting 58 percent from the field.

While there were questions about how well his game would translate to the NBA level after he was a two-time Wooden Award winner, two-time Naismith Award winner and two-time Associated Press Player of the Year during his Purdue career, he seemed to answer those in his first year.

Yet injuries have prevented him from building on that.

Edey has appeared in just 11 games in 2025-26 and has been sidelined since Dec. 7.

He was playing at an even higher level before the injury and was averaging a double-double of 13.6 points and 11.1 rebounds while shooting 63.3 percent from the field. 

This comes after a January update from the team that said "based on the unanimous recommendation of consulting experts, Edey will continue on his current plan of offloading and rehabilitation, with a reevaluation to follow in approximately six weeks."

The latest evaluation means he will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the campaign, and the Grizzlies certainly hope he is back on the floor for the 2026-27 campaign.
