Warriors, Gui Santos Agree to Contract Extension, Reported Details and Salary Cap Implications
The Golden State Warriors have reportedly locked in forward Gui Santos for at least another three years.
The Warriors announced Saturday that Santos has signed a multi-year contract, which ESPN's Shams Charania reported is a three-year, $15 million deal with a player option for 2028-29.
Santos, who is playing this season on a $2.22 million club option, was previously set to hit restricted free agency this summer. He was one of 28 players eligible to sign an extension before June 30, per ESPN's Bobby Marks.
The Warriors now have nine players on standard contracts for next season, per Marks. The franchise also has player options for Draymond Green, Al Horford and De'Anthony Melton.
The Warriors were projected to be an NBA-high $105 million above next season's salary cap prior to the Santos extension, per Spotrac.
Spotrac projected the Warriors to be about $33 million below the first apron and $45.7 million below the second apron prior to re-signing Santos or activating any player options.
The Warriors currently have $2.6 million in space below their hard cap of the second apron this season, per Spotrac.
Green has a $27.7 million player option for next season, while activating the options for Horford and Melton would cost the Warriors about $6 million and $3.5 million, respectively, per Spotrac.
The Warriors will also need to make a decision regarding Kristaps Porziลฤฃis, who is currently set to hit unrestricted free agency when his contract expires after this season.
Other players on expiring standard contracts include pending UFAs Gary Payton II and Seth Curry and pending RFA Quinten Post.
Santos, who will turn 24 in June, is now signed through at least his age-25 season in 2027-28.
He is playing in his third season with the Warriors since the franchise selected him with the No. 55 pick of the 2022 draft.
The forward has since joined Andrew Nembhard, Jaylin Williams, Max Christie and Jabari Walker as standouts from the second round of his draft.
The extension comes at the tail end of a career-best month for Santos, who averaged 15.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.7 steals through nine games in February.
He has posted at least 15 points in each of his last four outings for the Warriors, including a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double on Tuesday at the New Orleans Pelicans.
Santos will look to celebrate his new contract with another strong outing when the Warriors return to action on Saturday night against the Los Angeles Lakers.
