Mason Plumlee Signs Contract With Wemby, Spurs Until End of NBA Season After 10-Day Deal

The San Antonio Spurs added to their frontcourt depth Friday, signing veteran Mason Plumlee to a rest-of-season-deal.

Plumlee's agent, Mark Bartelstein, informed ESPN's Shams Charania of the transaction.

The Spurs previously signed Plumlee to a 10-day contract on Feb. 17, but he did not appear in a game for the team over the course of that deal. In each of the Spurs' past five games, Plumlee was listed as out due to return-to-competition reconditioning, per RotoWire (h/t CBS Sports).

After starring collegiately at Duke, Plumlee went 22nd overall in the 2013 NBA draft, and he has carved out a 13-year NBA career for himself with eight different teams, including the Spurs.

Plumlee, who will turn 36 on March 5, owns career averages of 7.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 874 regular-season games with the Brooklyn Nets, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns.

The 7-footer has averaged double-digits in scoring in three separate seasons during his career, but his production has dipped in recent years.

Plumlee averaged 5.3 points and 5.1 rebounds with the Clippers in 2023-24, and 4.5 points and 6.1 rebounds with the Suns last season.

He also appeared in 14 games for the Hornets this season, averaging just 1.9 points and 2.9 rebounds before getting traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder earlier this month and subsequently getting waived.

Plumlee doesn't figure to play big minutes for a Spurs team that is second in the Western Conference with a 43-16 record and among the league's leading title contenders, but he could be a helpful addition nonetheless.

If the Spurs want to rest superstar center Victor Wembanyama at times down the stretch to ensure he is healthy and at his best in the playoffs, Plumlee can fill in at times along with fellow veteran bigs Luke Kornet, Kelly Olynyk and Bismack Biyombo.

Plumlee also brings a ton of experience to the table, as well as a unique skill set, as he is a quality rebounder and passer from the center position.

Even if Plumlee doesn't end up playing much, he is a solid insurance policy for head coach Mitch Johnson, and a vet who can serve as a sounding board for Wemby.
