Philip Rivers' Son Gunner Commits to NC State, Everything You Need to Know About Class of 2027 QB

Scott PolacekFeb 23, 2026

There will be another member of the Rivers family under center for the North Carolina State Wolfpack.

Keegan Pope of Rivals reported Monday that quarterback Gunner Rivers committed to NC State over the likes of Auburn, Georgia, Miami and Boston College, among others. His father, Philip, also played for the Wolfpack prior to his lengthy NFL career.

According to Pope, the younger Rivers "has long been thought of as a lean to the school."

Rivers is a 4-star prospect and the No. 125 overall prospect and No. 10 quarterback in the class of 2027, per 247Sports' composite rankings.

He threw for 2,813 yards, 44 touchdowns and just five interceptions during his junior year in high school and has the size at over 6'3" to stand tall in the pocket and make a number of throws downfield.

Andrew Ivins of 247Sports provided a scouting report and noted Rivers "feathers the football into tight windows with his touch and timing" while possessing enough mobility to keep plays alive in the pocket and avoid pass-rushers.

The younger Rivers will have significant shoes to fill, as his father was the 2003 ACC Player of the Year before he was the No. 4 overall pick of the 2004 NFL draft. Philip Rivers started in all four of his seasons with the Wolfpack and threw for 4,491 yards, 34 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his final year.

He parlayed that college production into NFL stardom as an eight-time Pro Bowler who led the league in passing yards in 2010 and touchdowns in 2008 while amassing 12 different seasons with more than 4,000 passing yards.

Philip Rivers coaches his son in high school, although he returned to the NFL this past season for the first time since 2020 and started three games for the Indianapolis Colts.

It would be anything but surprising if the younger Rivers follows his footsteps all the way to the NFL, but that football journey will first feature time at the same ACC program.
