Jonathan Kuminga Injury Update, Timeline to Make Hawks Debut After Trade From Warriors
The Atlanta Hawks have provided an injury update on forward Jonathan Kuminga, who has been out since suffering a left knee bone bruise against the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 22, when he still played for the Golden State Warriors before being traded a couple weeks later.
The Hawks added Kuminga and Buddy Hield from the Warriors on Feb. 5 for big man Kristaps Porziņģis.
The Hawks begin the post-All-Star portion of their schedule on Thursday at the Philadelphia 76ers. Given the week-long timeline, it's safe to assume he'll miss four more games with his new team at minimum, with the Hawks playing a quartet of contests between Thursday and next Tuesday.
Atlanta has lost five of its last seven games to fall to 26-30. The 10th-place Hawks appear likely to fight for a play-in tournament spot down the stretch and could certainly use Kuminga back ASAP to have more reinforcements in the closing months.
The 23-year-old Kuminga is in his fifth NBA season. He's averaging 12.1 points on 45.4 percent shooting, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
Kuminga had a tumultuous tenure in Golden State to say the least, characterized in part by his inconsistent presence in and out of the starting lineup and rotation.
At times, Kuminga showed why the Warriors selected him with the No. 7 overall pick, like when he averaged 24.3 PPG in their final four playoff matchups against the Minnesota Timberwolves last year.
Eventually, the Warriors and him parted ways, and now he has a fresh start in Atlanta. Hopefully he'll be able to showcase his talents shortly, and the update Wednesday provides hope he could be back sooner rather than later.
