Best Team Fit, Projected Contract for the Top 2026 NFL Free Agent at Every Position

Alex KayFeb 17, 2026

The 2026 NFL free-agent class may not be a star-studded one, but there are plenty of game-changing talents up for grabs. Many of these players are just entering their prime and could quickly develop into some of the league's biggest names at their next stop.

While most of these players are just finishing out cheap rookie deals and will be looking to cash in by taking the highest offer, it's important to give some consideration to fit as well.

Picking a struggling franchise with shaky teammates and an inconsistent coaching staff could set a player back, while landing with a quality program that can maximize a free agent's talents may result in a rapid rise to superstardom.

With that in mind, read on for a look at where each of the top 2026 free agents at every position—using the Bleacher Report Scouting Department's latest big board for rankings—best fit and what type of contract they should receive when the new league year opens.

QB: Daniel Jones

1 of 10
Colts Jaguars Football

Best Fit: Indianapolis Colts

Daniel Jones was a revelation for the Colts last season, at least until he suffered a fibula injury and a subsequent Achilles tear that derailed what was shaping up to be an MVP-caliber campaign.

During the first eight weeks of the 2025 season, the quarterback completed a blistering 71.2 percent of his passes for over 2,000 yards and 13 touchdowns. Indy was cruising towards a top playoff seed during that span too, going 7-1 in his first eight starts.

Although the Colts eventually crashed out, those performances will likely convince the program to run it back with Jones in 2026.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard made it clear that the franchise envisions the veteran signal-caller returning on a new deal.

"I think Daniel Jones has a really bright future here in Indianapolis," he said. "I think (a return is) mutual on both sides. I think Daniel was a really good fit for this organization, and I think this organization and city were a really good fit for Daniel."

While Jones is currently rehabbing from yet another major injury—he's appeared in 16 games just once during his seven-year NFL career—he's expected to be back in action by the start of training camp.

If Jones continues to trend in the right direction, he'll garner a sizable contract offer from the Colts. The deal is likely to be light on guarantees and heavy on incentives, given Jones' injury-prone history, but he'll still cash in as the open market's top QB option.

Projected Contract: Three years, $99 million

RB: Travis Etienne Jr.

2 of 10
Bills Jaguars Football

Best Fit: Kansas City Chiefs

Travis Etienne Jr. returned with a vengeance this past season following an ugly, injury-plagued 2024 campaign.

Etienne cast aside any doubts about his ability to continue carrying an NFL backfield, racking up 1,107 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 260 totes. He added another 292 yards and six scores on 36 receptions, showcasing versatility and playmaking skills that will make him a popular free-agent target this offseason.

While Etienne shined for a resurgent Jacksonville Jaguars squad that went 13-4 in 2025, his services may be better utilized by a powerhouse program that had a down season—the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs suffered one of the more dramatic Super Bowl hangovers in league history, going 6-11—by far their worst record of the Andy Reid era—and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014. While there were several factors that contributed to this unsightly season, one of the more glaring ones was a lack of meaningful backfield production.

Both Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt averaged fewer than four yards per carry in 2025. Patrick Mahomes was the only capable rusher on the roster—putting up a career-high 462 yards on his 64 carries—but went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 15.

With the superstar signal-caller working his way back from a torn ACL, it'll be imperative for the Chiefs to sign a difference-making RB who can shoulder the offensive load in 2026. Etienne fits the bill as a dynamic dual-threat back who would thrive in Reid's offensive scheme.

Projected Contract: Three years, $25 million

WR: George Pickens

3 of 10
Cowboys Commanders Football

Best Fit: Dallas Cowboys

George Pickens had a transcendent 2025 campaign, one that raised his profile from a promising but inconsistent pass-catcher to one of the NFL's premier receivers.

His ascendance came at an opportune time, as he's set to enter the offseason as not only the best wideout on the open market but also the top free agent at any position.

The Pittsburgh Steelers did Pickens a massive favor by trading him to the Dallas Cowboys, a team that employs an elite passer in Dak Prescott. After years of struggling to produce with lower-end signal-callers throwing him the ball, Pickens emerged as Dallas' most dangerous receiving threat and posted career highs in targets (137), catches (93), receiving yardage (1,429), and touchdowns (nine).

While Dallas would likely prefer to retain Pickens for the long haul, the finances of doing so are tricky. The team shouldn't let him reach the open market, however, and has the option of franchise tagging him to avoid that.

Although the cost of tagging a WR will be a hefty $28 million in 2026, Pickens' production absolutely warrants that type of deal. The Cowboys haven't hesitated to deploy the franchise tag in prior years—utilizing it six times since the start of the 2018 offseason—and are likely to do so again in 2026 with Pickens per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Although Pickens won't have the long-term security that a multi-year deal provides quite yet, he'll be well-positioned to sign a record-setting contract in 2027 if he can repeat his successes this coming season.

Projected Contract: One year, $28 million

TE: Kyle Pitts

4 of 10
Saints Falcons Football

Best Fit: New England Patriots

Kyle Pitts may not have lived up to the hype he had coming into the league as the highest drafted tight end of all time, but the No. 4 overall pick in 2021 showed vast improvements this past season and still hasn't come close to reaching his ceiling.

Pitts just had his best season since a Pro Bowl rookie campaign, tallying 928 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 88 receptions. He accomplished this despite continued inconsistency at the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback position, a longstanding issue that could lead the tight end to move on this offseason.

Still just 25 years old and ranking as the top available tight end in the free-agent class, Pitts should have his pick of enticing suitors. The New England Patriots would be an ideal fit and should have interest in the tight end's services.

Although the Pats came up short in Super Bowl LX, they are primed to be a perennial contender with Drake Maye running their offense. The young signal-caller narrowly missed out on winning the NFL MVP award during a sensational 2025 season and could be even better in 2026 with Pitts in the picture.

Pitts is a matchup nightmare, packing elite athleticism and speed into a 6'6", 250-pound frame. He's too fast for linebackers to cover and too big for defensive backs, traits that renowned offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could take major advantage of.

With New England largely lacking consistent pass-catchers, Pitts would immediately become a huge part of the offense and have a real chance to be the most productive New England tight end since Rob Gronkowski.

Projected Contract: Four years, $60 million

OL: Tyler Linderbaum

5 of 10
Bengals Ravens Football

Best Fit: New York Giants

Tyler Linderbaum will be the most coveted offensive lineman during an offseason in which a slew of teams will be desperate for upgrades in the offensive trenches.

Only 25 years old and coming off three consecutive Pro Bowl campaigns, the Baltimore Ravens center won't be cheap. Fellow centers Creed Humphrey and Cam Jurgens both signed deals worth more than $17 million per year in recent seasons and that will likely be the starting point in Linderbaum's contract negotiations.

Linderbaum's contributions are worth the investment. He's a top-notch run blocker and has held up well in pass protection too. He's been the lynchpin for a Ravens rushing attack that has consistently rated amongst the NFL's best during his tenure and has given up a meager two sacks across the previous three seasons.

While Linderbaum broke out as a star center in Charm City, he could almost guarantee he'll continue his run of success by signing with the New York Giants this offseason.

With John Harbaugh joining the G-Men following his dismissal from the Ravens, Linderbaum may want to follow the head coach who drafted him No. 25 overall in 2022 to the Big Apple. SNY's Connor Hughes reported that Harbaugh wants to be "aggressive in targeting ex-Ravens in free agency", with Linderbaum standing out as the top choice to go after.

Linderbaum represents a massive upgrade in Big Blue's offensive trenches. Adding him to an offense that already includes several rising stars in Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo could push the Giants to new heights and help open the Harbaugh era with a postseason appearance.

Projected Contract: Four years, $79 million

DL: John Franklin-Meyers

6 of 10
Jaguars Broncos Football

Best Fit: Chicago Bears

John Franklin-Meyers has been one of the most consistent contributors on a number of strong defenses during his seven NFL seasons. He's flown under the radar for a majority of his career but finally has a chance to cash in with a big contract this offseason.

Franklin-Meyers is one of the best in the business at generating pressure from the interior of the defensive trenches. He's truly shined in that department during his tenure with the Denver Broncos, amassing a hefty 14.5 sacks since the start of the 2024 season.

Although he's not the biggest defensive lineman at 6'4", 288 pounds, he's athletic, powerful and quick. He's versatile enough to play anywhere along the d-line, a trait that will make him a popular free-agent target this offseason.

While staying with Vance Joseph in the Mile High City wouldn't be a bad option for Franklin-Meyers, landing with the Chicago Bears could be an even better career move for the 29-year-old.

Chicago struggled to get pressure on opposing signal-callers this past season, accumulating a middling 35 sacks in total. The team also ranked in the bottom half of the league in both rush and pass defense, an issue that Franklin-Meyers can help shore up with his steady presence in the defensive trenches.

Projected Contract: Three years, $43 million

Edge: Trey Hendrickson

7 of 10
Jets Bengals Football

Best Fit: Baltimore Ravens

Trey Hendrickson's time with the Cincinnati Bengals has likely come to a rather acrimonious end. After holding out much of the 2025 offseason for a new deal, the 2024 All-Pro went down with a core muscle injury after just seven games.

While his campaign was a bust, he's only a year removed from the latest of his back-to-back 17.5 sack seasons. The four-time Pro Bowler has long been considered one of the NFL's best pass-rushers and shouldn't have much trouble regaining that status with a new team in 2026.

Landing with one of Cincy's fierce AFC North rivals could be exactly what Hendrickson needs to rejuvenate his career. The Baltimore Ravens make perfect sense for the 31-year-old to sign with and could help him quickly return to superstar form.

Baltimore mustered a meager 30 sacks in 2025—a 24-sack drop-off from the previous season—and lacked a difference-maker on the edge.

Travis Jones led the team with a mere five sacks across his 16 contests. Hendrickson averaged 14.1 sacks per season between 2020-24, production the Ravens sorely need to get back to playing the type of high level defense the franchise is known for.

Projected Contract: Two years, $40 million

LB: Devin Lloyd

8 of 10
Bills Jaguars Football

Best Fit: Cincinnati Bengals

Devin Lloyd locked in during a make-or-break 2025 campaign, posting a memorable contract year while leading a stout Jacksonville Jaguars defense to the playoffs.

Lloyd was able to play sideline-to-sideline defense, amassing 81 tackles, seven pass defenses, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. He showed incredible instincts and playmaking ability too, racking up five interceptions and even returning one for a 99-yard touchdown.

The Bengals can't afford to miss out on a linebacker of Lloyd's caliber. The organization has been squandering a Super Bowl window with a peak Joe Burrow leading elite offenses largely due to defensive ineptitude.

Lloyd would be a massive upgrade to Cincy's linebacking corps. The team struggled to get worthwhile production from the position last year, relying on overmatched rookies in Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight Jr. to play sizable roles.

With Lloyd excelling in both coverage and against the run last year, he's proven to be the type of do-it-all talent that the Bengals desperately need to bolster their defense.

Projected Contract: Four years, $59 million

CB: Riq Woolen

9 of 10
Super Bowl Football

Best Fit: San Francisco 49ers

Riq Woolen has had a polarizing tenure with the Seahawks. After a strong start to his career resulted in a Pro Bowl nod as a rookie, the cornerback hit some rough patches and even emerged as a potential trade candidate leading up to this year's deadline.

Seattle opted against dealing its jumbo-sized defensive back, however, and certainly doesn't regret the decision after Woolen helped lead the team to a Super Bowl LX victory. He nearly cost the club a chance to appear in the big game by drawing a painful unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the NFC Championship Game, but made up for it with smothering coverage.

During a three-game playoff run, Woolen recorded a solid eight tackles and four pass breakups. He was targeted 17 times and only allowed eight completions for 168 yards.

Unfortunately for the Seahawks, it's tough to keep a Super Bowl team together. Other teams will be happy to poach free agents from the reigning champions, with Woolen standing out as one of the more coveted corners in the 2026 class.

The rival San Francisco 49ers could not only bolster their own secondary, but also knock their NFC West rivals down a peg by luring Woolen away this offseason.

The Niners have struggled at the outside cornerback position and could benefit heavily by adding a 6'4", 210-pound playmaker into the mix.

Woolen has racked up 12 interceptions and 53 pass defenses during his first 64 career games and still has plenty of tread left on his tires at the age of 26, making him an excellent option for San Francisco to sign to a long-term deal.

Projected Contract: Four years, $55 million

S: Reed Blankenship

10 of 10
49ers Eagles Football

Best Fit: Philadelphia Eagles

Reed Blankenship has gone from being an unheralded, undrafted free agent in 2022 to the top safety in the 2026 free-agent class.

Blankenship emerged as a regular starter in his second season and has become one of the Eagles' most consistent defenders since. He's tallied 308 tackles, 23 pass defenses, nine picks and a trio of fumble recoveries across his first 56 career contests and should be rewarded with a major pay raise this offseason.

Remaining in Philadelphia could be in the best interest of both the organization and Blankenship.

The Eagles helped cultivate Blankenship into a top defensive back and know how important he is to their defensive efforts. He's come up with a slew of big-time plays in clutch situations, making key tackles or coming up with game-changing turnovers at opportune moments.

While he's not an elite cover man, Blankenship's motor, intelligence, versatility and playmaking more than make up for his coverage lapses. Philadelphia knows how to get the most out of him while hiding his weaknesses, making a long-term deal to stay the best option for each party.

Projected Contract: Three years, $20 million
