After officials were able to settle things down, Powell and Jaylin Sellers were ejected for Providence, while St. John's lost Kelvin Odih, Ruben Prey, Lefteris Liotopoulos and Dillon Mitchell.
"You're not supposed to come off the bench, but you can't let your players get beat up," St. John's head coach Rick Pitino told reporters after the game, per ESPN.com. "You can't fight. Back when I was the Kentucky coach we fought almost every SEC game, and it was not a big deal. But you can't fight any more, so toughness has to come between the lines."
Providence coach Kim English also spoke to reporters about the incident after the game, per ESPN.com: "There's a time to foul hard. There's a time to foul a poor free throw shooter hard. That's fouling to not let them get the ball above their head. Fouling their arms. It's a good, clean basketball play. A good hard foul. You don't want to give up 'and-1s.' He had plenty of opportunity to get in front of him, just playing straight up."
According to the TNT broadcast (h/t Dylan Svoboda of the New York Post), a fan was also ejected from the arena for getting involved in the altercation.
Police and security guards were also on the court attempting to help deescalate the situation.
This was the second and final scheduled meeting between the Big East rivals of the season, though they could play again in the conference tournament. Providence won the first matchup at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 3.
