Seth Vertenley of Goal.com reported that Hernandez will be absent from selection against Darmstadt on Saturday.
The Mexico international has been a massive hit at the BayArena since moving from Manchester United in a £7.3 million move last summer, scoring 13 goals in 17 matches for the Factory Squad.
Leverkusen have relied largely on his fine form in front of goal for this season's success, and the Germans will be at risk of seeing any rhythm disrupted by his absence from the lineup.
Manager Roger Schmidt will now look to Stefan Kiessling and Admir Mehmedi to provide a spark for his side in attack, with Hernandez facing an uncertain wait on the sidelines.
Hernandez's injury will ensure he misses Leverkusen's upcoming fixtures against Darmstadt, and it is unclear when he will make his return to the first team.
