Curt Cignetti's Indiana CFP Title Game Headset Breaks Bill Belichick Record at Auction
The headset Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti used during the Hoosiers' victory over Miami in the College Football Playoff Championship Game sold for a record price at auction.
Will Stern of cllct.com reported Cignetti's headset went for $112,500, shattering the previous high-water mark for a headset held by Bill Belichick.
Belichick's headset from the New England Patriots' first Super Bowl victory over the St. Louis Rams in February 2002 was the previous record-holder with a sale price of $10,200 when it sold at auction in 2018.
Cignetti's headset had an interesting trajectory while it was available. Stern noted that bidding "exploded" over the final 24 hours, going from $20,000 to $112,500 with a total of 212 bids.
Per Steve Samra of On3.com, the headset was among several game-used Hoosiers items from the College Football Playoff that were sold at auction. Other objects include a team-issued player towel and a ball from the Peach Bowl against Oregon.
Proceeds from the sale of Cignetti's headset will go to help with Indiana's NIL fund.
Cignetti orchestrated one of the most remarkable program turnarounds in college football history. The 64-year-old was hired in November 2023 by Indiana, which had just three winning seasons in the previous 29 years and had never won double-digit games in a single season.
After the Hoosiers won 11 games and made the Playoff in Cignetti's first season, they became just the second team in college football history to go 16-0. Twelve of their 16 wins this season came by at least 10 points.
Cignetti capped off his historic season by leading Indiana to a 27-21 win over Miami in the College Football Playoff Championship Game on Jan. 19.
