Cam Thomas Reportedly Waived by Nets, Top Landing Spots After NBA Trade Deadline

Cam Thomas' time with the Brooklyn Nets is reportedly over.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Thursday that Brooklyn waived the guard, which made him a free agent ahead of the season's stretch run. With that in mind, here is a look at some potential landing spots for the 24-year-old:

  • Philadelphia 76ers
  • Boston Celtics
  • Milwaukee Bucks

Thomas didn't hesitate to let those teams and others know what they could be getting if they add him, as he told Marc J. Spears of Andscape he was "super excited and ready to actually help and contribute to another team. My next team is getting elite scoring, good playmaking and a good combo guard."

Brooklyn reportedly shopped Thomas before the deadline but couldn't find a suitable trade, per Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic. The Nets reportedly discussed a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers to swap Thomas for Lonzo Ball, but Ball ended up being dealt to the Utah Jazz instead.

The LSU product averaged 22.5 points per game in 2023-24 but was limited to just 25 games last season. He still averaged 24.0 points in those 25 contests but has assumed a smaller role in 2025-26 at 24.3 minutes a night.

Even that smaller role hasn't fully stopped him from showing off his scoring prowess, though, at 15.6 points per game.

Still, efficiency is a massive concern considering he is shooting just 39.9 percent from the floor and 32.5 percent from deep.

Perhaps joining a contender will help him improve in that area, as opposing defenses will be more focused on his talented teammates than they were on the ones he played alongside with the 13-36 Nets.

The Philadelphia 76ers could use a scoring guard who could anchor their second unit after they traded Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder, per Charania. The Boston Celtics also need more productive backcourt depth to provide support for Derrick White and Payton Pritchard.

ESPN's Bobby Marks noted the Celtics have a second open roster spot after dealing Chris Boucher to the Utah Jazz.

As for the Milwaukee Bucks, their decision to not trade Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of Thursday's deadline means they could be looking for a late push when the superstar returns to the court. They are just three games behind the Chicago Bulls for the final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.

Adding an offensive spark like Thomas to the backcourt who could take advantage of spacing created by the attention Antetokounmpo draws could help them make that charge.
