New NBA Trade Rumors on Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Mavs' Plans at 2026 Deadline
It was once thought that the Dallas Mavericks were likely to trade star big man Anthony Davis ahead of Thursday's deadline, but it sounds like their plans have shifted.
The Athletic's Christian Clark reported that "it remains unlikely" that the Mavericks will move on from Davis by Thursday. However, Clark added that Dallas "will listen to offers about" veteran shooting guard Klay Thompson.
Davis is one of the best two-way players in the league when healthy, but his trade value has plummeted amid yet another injury-riddled season. He's currently sidelined for an extended period after suffering ligament damage in his left hand.
Clark went on to explain that the league no longer views Davis as a favorable acquisition, especially when the financial component is considered.
"League sources The Athletic spoke with have expressed concern about Davis exercising his $62.7 million player option for the 2027-28 season, when he will be 34 years old," Clark stated. "Some prominent voices in the NBA have also expressed incredulity about Davis' Klutch Sports representatives desiring a contract extension for him while he underperforms during his current deal."
The Atlanta Hawks were once considered a top landing spot for Davis, but a league source told Clark that "there were no active discussions between Dallas and Atlanta" as of Monday afternoon.
As for Thompson, he has one year remaining on his contract after this season. Clark reported that he "remains a knock-down 3-point shooter and a well-respected voice in Dallas' locker room," so the team could have a high asking price for him.
The Mavs are 19-30 and have lost their last four games, so changes could be coming to the roster by Thursday's deadline.
