'Hell-Bent,' Clippers Reportedly Focused on 2027 NBA Free Agency amid James Harden Trade Rumors
The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly "hell-bent" on clearing their books to have enough salary cap space to go after top superstars in free agency in the summer of 2027, per Sam Amick of The Athletic.
That news comes amid multiple reports that the Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers are discussing a trade that would involve L.A. trading Harden for Darius Garland, per Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.
"As league sources close to Harden discussed with The Athletic, the Clippers' long-term plan of clearing their salary cap books for the summer of 2027 was a factor in this decision," Amick wrote. "Here he was playing elite-level basketball at age 36, knowing full well that the organization is widely expected to pivot away from this current core two summers from now, and the present day suddenly crashed headlong into his unknown hoops future.

"If you somehow missed it in all the previous reporting, the Clippers are hell-bent on chasing all the top superstars in '27 free agency. As it stands, the only Clippers player with guaranteed money for that season is center Ivica Zubac ($20.9 million). Add in the uniqueness of Harden's current contract, how his $42.3 million salary for next season could be slashed to $13.3 million if he were to be waived by July 11, and you start to understand why both parties now find themselves looking for a mutually beneficial way out of this partnership."
Harden's current contract has a $42.3 million player option for 2026-27. Per The Stein Line's Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, Harden is looking for a longer contract, and a source told the duo that the trade talks are "all about a contract extension."
The 2027 potential free agent list is stacked, with the emphasis there being players could, in theory, sign extensions with their current teams (or any teams they are traded to between now and then) beforehand and be under contract a couple summers from now.
For now, though, the list of stars includes, per Spotrac: Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Donovan Mitchell, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, Jimmy Butler, Karl-Anthony Towns, Trae Young and more.
It's understandable why the Clippers are looking to clear their books. At the same time, the 23-26 Clippers have vaulted up the standings to ninth place after starting 6-21. Seeing L.A. looking to offload Harden, who has averaged 25.4 points and 8.1 assists, is a bit of a head-scratcher in the short-term.
In addition, Garland is on a five-year, $197.2 million contract that runs through the 2027-28 season, so that doesn't exactly work with the Clippers' reported plans to clear their books for the summer of 2027.
That being said, L.A. has nothing on the books past 2028 and only one contract locked down for 2027-28 (Ivica Zubac, $21 million). So the Clippers should be able to get a lot done in the summer of 2027. The cap for the 2027-28 is unclear, but it's set at $154.6 million and should only grow.
The trade does allow L.A. to skew younger, though, with the 26-year-old Garland vs. the 36-year-old Harden. Garland is a talented player and two-time All-Star in his own right, even if the former player's production (18.0 PPG, 6.9 APG) doesn't match The Beard's output.
Ultimately, this potential trade is one to watch for as Thursday's deadline of 3 p.m. ET nears.
