Has Jonathan Kuminga Trade Demand Changed amid Jimmy Butler Injury? Latest Rumors on Warriors Star

Andrew PetersJan 22, 2026

Jonathan Kuminga reportedly still has no interest in staying with the Golden State Warriors.

NBA insider Chris Haynes reported on Thursday that the forward's position regarding a trade request hasn't changed.

"Kuminga has no desire to remain a member of the Golden State Warriors," Haynes said.

It appears at this point that there's nothing that can be done to get Kuminga and the Warriors on the same page. Haynes added details about where he stands with Golden State.

"I'm told that his relationship with head coach Steve Kerr is fractured beyond repair," Haynes said. "He's felt that he hasn't had any organizational support throughout this process. So, he's felt devalued with the organization."

Kuminga demanded a trade last week when he became eligible to be traded.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania and Anthony Slater, the Warriors are hoping to get a return that will help them win now without making long-term commitments.

"League sources said the Warriors have been prioritizing expiring contracts in return for Kuminga. They've declined the idea of taking back long-term contracts unless they view it as no-brainer positive value. That's been the hold up in conversations with Sacramento," Charania and Slater wrote.

The issue on the Warriors' side is that Kuminga's trade value has only decreased since the start of the season, especially in recent weeks. He's played only 19 games this season and was out of the rotation for an entire month until this week.

According to Haynes, the Warriors plan to get Kuminga back in the rotation in hopes of him proving he's worth a valuable haul.

"For Jonathan Kuminga, this will be a bit of a brief showcase," Haynes said. "Obviously, he hasn't been playing that much and his market value isn't what the Warriors hoped it would be. You can make an argument that they contributed to that market price.

Kuminga, 23, is putting up 12.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game this season.

The Warriors are sitting in eighth place in the West at 25-20, and the recent loss of Jimmy Butler to a torn ACL only increases their need for a big return for Kuminga.
