Coming off a school-record 11 wins in Curt Cignetti's first season, expectations for the Hoosiers were somewhat muted at the start of 2025.
The AP had the Hoosiers ranked No. 20 in the preseason poll, though they were keeping good company with fellow 2025 playoff teams Texas A&M and Mississippi were sandwiched between them.
Some skepticism was warranted for a program that had no proven track record of sustained success and lost its starting quarterback with Kurtis Rourke being a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
Little did anyone know at the time that Indiana had the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner on the roster after Fernando Mendoza announced his transfer to Bloomington in December 2024.
The Hoosiers climbed their way into the top 10 by Week 5 and had a seven-week run at No. 2 before finally claiming the top spot on Dec. 7 following a victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game.
Despite coming up short in the College Football Playoff Championship Game, Miami put together its best season since 2002. Head coach Mario Cristobal has increased his win total every season with the Hurricanes, going from five wins in 2022 to a program-record 13 this season.
The Big Ten and SEC dominated the AP poll with 13 teams in the top 25. The Big Ten's presence is heavy at the top, with Indiana, Oregon and Ohio State all in the top five.
This season marks the third consecutive year that the SEC doesn't have a team ranked in the top two of the final AP poll. The conference had gone eight consecutive years with at least one team in the top two of the final poll from 2015 to '22, with six national titles during that span.
