Mookie Betts Reveals MLB Retirement Timeline to WWE Icon John Cena Amid Dodgers Contract

Joseph ZuckerJan 19, 2026

Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts set a date for his retirement, but don't worry, Dodgers fans. It's a few years in the offing.

Appearing on What Drives You with John Cena (via MLB.com's Brent Maguire), Betts told the WWE legend he'll hang up his cleats when his contract expires after the 2032 season.

"I'll be 40, my little girl will be 14, my son will be 10," he said. "My parents were always there, and I want do that same thing for my kids."

Betts still has seven years left in his deal. If he continues to perform reasonably well and the Dodgers keep contending, then the eight-time All-Star may feel a little differently about extending his career when the moment arrives.

"Towards the end, it's probably going to suck," he said of winding things down. "For a while, it's kind of what has defined me. There's no way for me to substitute going into the locker room, being on a plane and developing relationships with so many people for 20 to 30 years."

But Betts has already achieved everything an MLB player can at an individual and team level. He'd be a first-ballot Hall of Famer if he walked away right now. With seven more years to collect accolades, the four-time World Series champion can put himself in the inner circle of all-time greats.

When they first signed him to a 12-year extension in 2020, the Dodgers may have had an inkling it was their first and last contract with Betts. Having him commit to a retirement timeline this far out will allow ample time for the front office to consider succession plans.
