Senegal Beats Morocco to Win AFCON Title, Recapping Controversial Finish in Wild Final
You don't see a match like this every day.
Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations final on a Pape Gueye screamer in extra time, but it was a scoreline that doesn't tell the story of just how bizarre the finale truly was on Sunday.
In the 98th minute of second-half stoppage time, Morocco were awarded a controversial penalty for El Hadji Malick Diouf's tackle of Brahim Díaz. Senegal was so irate over the decision—and for a Senegalese goal that was disallowed just moments earlier—that he literally pulled his players off the pitch.
They eventually returned, however, and Díaz shockingly missed a panenka attempt on the penalty try.
All of that set up Gueye's ultimate winner in extra time.
It was a long, winding and controversial road for Senegal, but they are now the champions of Africa.
