Luis Suarez Says Premier League Better Than La Liga, Interested in MLS Move

Tom SunderlandJul 31, 2015

Luis Suarez has long moved on from England, but the Barcelona star hails the Premier League as the "best in the world." Camp Nou fans need not worry about divided loyalties, though, as he views Barca as "the best team."

Speaking to ESPN Deportes Radio (via Goal's Mark Doyle), the Uruguay international gave an honest account of his motivation to feature in Major League Soccer one day, calling it "a pleasure" to play for the Blaugrana:

"

I would like to retire at the club I love, Nacional. But I also want to return to Ajax someday. The MLS would not be a bad choice. It could happen one day. The US love of the game is growing a lot. People are filling the stadiums.

The Premier League is the best league in the world. But Barcelona are the best team. I do not consider myself one of the best players in the world but it is a pleasure to play in the best team. And we still have goals to fulfil. We want to become the first team to win consecutive Champions Leagues. We're very motivated this season. We are obliged to keep winning.

It's common practice for footballers to exclusively praise those in whom they have the most invested, but Suarez isn't the kind to bite his tongue when it comes to candid opinion.

The former Liverpool ace is hoping to maintain the astronomical standards produced during his maiden season in Catalunya, where he aided Barcelona in clinching a domestic and European treble.

Despite that start to life in Spain, the South American holds a soft spot for England, the scene of some of his greatest controversies—but also some of his biggest successes.

During his three-and-a-half years at Anfield, Suarez was involved in the second of three career biting incidents, an allegation of racism and numerous diving controversies. However, ESPN FC's Francesc Tomas determines all this may have been essential to the building of his character:

Regardless of what occurred in his past, Suarez is enjoying life in La Liga now and is thriving alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar, the devastating trio that led the Blaugrana to treble glory last term.

Despite waiting until October 2014 to make his competitive Barcelona debut, Suarez scored 25 goals in 43 appearances last season and is in good shape to better that tally this season, per South American writer Juan Arango:

It seems unlikely the forward will complete a move to MLS anytime soon considering he's 28 years of age and will be expected to hit his playing peak in the coming years, if we aren't witnessing it already.

Should that switch come to fruition, however, fans may one day witness him and Steven Gerrard once again searching for the same crown, with the ex-England international having recently joined L.A. Galaxy.

Suarez scored 82 goals in 133 games for the Reds and left Merseyside as a celebrated figure, where the fans accepted his shortcomings and embraced his finer attributes.

Looking back upon his time in England with fondness, Suarez bears no grudges with the Premier League, but he is also set to continue an already rich career tapestry at Barcelona.
