Mexico Starting XI and Squad Projection for the 2026 World Cup

Jon ArnoldJan 12, 2026

This summer, Mexico will host the FIFA Men's World Cup for the third time, more than any other nation. While simply having games in the country is a point of pride, a deep run from El Tri would make things even better for Mexico fans.

After a great start to 2025, with manager Javier Aguirre's team winning the Concacaf Nations League and then solidifying their claim to regional supremacy by winning the Gold Cup, Concacaf's continental championship, doubts have started to creep in among Mexico fans.

Mexico is yet to win since that Gold Cup final and suffered a particularly frustrating 4-0 loss to Colombia in October that reminded fans of the team they saw in the previous cycle, the one that slumped into Qatar and failed to get out of the group stage at the World Cup for the first time in decades.

Still, this Mexico team has talent, equipped with a forward in great form in the Premier League, one of the world's best teenage rising stars, and a number of fixtures ready to perform in the biggest moment of their lifetime.

Here's how Mexico may line up in the opening match of the tournament at the Estadio Azteca on June 11.

Goalkeeper: Luis Angel Malagón

For the first time in more than a decade, there are real questions about who will start for Mexico at the World Cup. Old-man Guillermo Ochoa is still playing, starting in Cyprus, and his World Cup heroics are plastered in the memory of not only Mexican supporters but fans of the game worldwide. But he's now 40, and it has been Malagón starting.

Yet, errors made by Malagón have left the door open for Chivas shot-stopper Raúl Rangel - or even the veteran Ochoa - to charge into the No. 1 role. For now, it's Malagón's to lose.

Right Back: Israel Reyes

A long-term injury to Rodrigo Huescas has turned right back into a problem spot for Aguirre, as various potential replacements have struggled to show they're at the level needed to start for El Tri. It means a converted center back may get the starting nod over his Club América teammate who actually plays right back. Nevertheless, Reyes is a defender who will be eager to show his abilities no matter where he's asked to play.

Center Back: Cesar Montes

Montes has fallen off the radar of a number of Mexico fans since he traded La Liga for the Russian Premier League, a competition seen on far fewer screens in North America. But he hasn't gotten any smaller. The mountainous defender uses his size well both at the back and when he gets forward on set pieces and is part of a locked-in center-back pairing for El Tri.

The left-footed center back seems to only be getting better, not only becoming a regular for Genoa but also captaining the Serie A side. He doesn't need to be the leader of the entire Mexico team, but does need to be the leader of the defense. Comfortable with the ball at his feet, Vasquez also is tough to press and good in the air in either box.

Left back: Jesus Gallardo

Tell Mexico fans that one of the few holdovers from the 2018 World Cup would be Gallardo and you're likely to get a groan. Yet, two things have allowed him to keep his place. First, no one has been good enough to replace him. Mateo Chavez's charge likely is arriving too late in the cycle to displace the experienced defender from the XI. Second, he's been very good, helping Toluca to consecutive titles and giving El Tri coaches an extra dimension with the way he gets forward from the left back spot.

Defensive midfielder: Edson Alvarez

While a move to work with Jose Mourinho didn't quite work out, with the legendary coach shown the door just days after Alvarez arrived, the 28-year-old is still a hugely important part of the Mexico XI.

Aguirre always wants Alvarez on the field, but doesn't always seem to know where. At times he's deployed as a center back, and even when in the middle he can drop between the center backs to give a three-man look.

But he's at his best when he can also put a pass forward and, at times, join the attack. Mexico knows what it's getting with Alvarez, and he likely will play every minute possible at the World Cup.

Center Midfield: Marcel Ruiz

Ruiz quietly has become one of Mexico's most consistent players for both club and country. While he was linked with moves to Brazil and to the English Championship in the summer, he stayed with Toluca, helping the club to a second consecutive Liga MX title and playing the most minutes of any player in the league on the way. Before that, he was a standout in the Gold Cup final for El Tri, regularly playing the 'pass before the pass' as his vision helped Mexico break through the U.S. midfield and create scoring opportunities. He also typically puts in strong shifts at the back, getting back to help win the ball and is generally an asset Aguirre will want to lean on.

Center Midfield: Gilberto Mora

He is only 17, but there are few doubts about Mora's abilities. Since becoming the youngest player ever to start and win a continental final with his Gold Cup final performance, he has only become more critical to the national team, shining as others around him struggle.

Whether it be his ability to create in open play, his long-range shot, or the dangerous set pieces he can play, Mexico will utilize all of Mora's skills. He's yet to reach a stage too big for him. Now, he'll start on the biggest one.

Right Wing: Roberto Alvarado

For all the potential the Celaya product showed, it appears he will play his entire career in Mexico. That said, the 27-year-old is headed for his second World Cup and is likely to start if he can hold off a charge by other attackers.

Alvarado's versatility can be his biggest strength or a weakness at the international level, being a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none. So, if Aguirre wants something specific from a matchup, he may get sent to the bench. On the field, though, he's able to combine well with those around him and provide a consistent scoring threat.

Center Forward: Raul Jimenez

A comeback story few saw coming, the veteran forward is El Tri's most in-form scorer and as close to a sure starter as you can get.

Plenty of fans wanted the 34-year-old to be replaced by a younger model, but Santi Gimenez has struggled with injury and hasn't been able to match what Raul is doing week in, week out with Fulham.

He scored in three of five festive fixtures between Dec. 22 and Jan. 7, and that's before getting into his recent numbers with El Tri. Would Mexico have lifted the Gold Cup without Raul? The Nations League? It's unlikely. If he's available, he'll lead the line at the home World Cup.

Left Wing: Alexis Vega

While he's never been able to hit the heights for Mexico that he has for Toluca, the current back-to-back Liga MX champion was also a key part of Mexico's push for the Gold Cup.

There are other dynamic attackers Mexico can lean on, but Vega already has experience working with Mora and also provides just a little something different that his competition can't. The only question is how much of a role to give him and exactly where you want him to pop up in the attack, since he can float centrally to set up Jimenez or stay wide.
