Jimbo Fisher Sounds Off on 'Selfish' Lane Kiffin for Ole Miss CFP Coaching Decision
The Ole Miss and LSU coaching merry-go-round is further under the spotlight with every College Football Playoff win for the Rebels, and former Florida State and Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher didn't miss an opportunity to call out Lane Kiffin.
On Wednesday, Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding announced offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. and running backs coach Kevin Smith will remain on staff for Thursday's CFP semifinal game against Miami.
However, tight ends coach Joe Cox and wide receivers coach George McDonald are leaving to join LSU even after they remained on Ole Miss' staff for the first two CFP games.
"It's selfish. It's stupid," Fisher said of the entire situation and how Kiffin has handled it since accepting the head coaching job with LSU after leading the Rebels to the CFP this season.
Fisher went on to explain he believes that Kiffin assumed Ole Miss would lose in one of the first two rounds when he was alright with some members of the coaching staff that are coming to LSU with him remaining with their former team through the CFP.
However, the transfer portal has now opened, which means this is an important time for building next season's roster. While that is an issue with the college football calendar as a whole, Kiffin is surely having a more difficult time building that roster with some of his assistant coaches still trying to win a national championship at Ole Miss.
"If you took them all and said they're never coming back, that's fine," Fisher said. "You set the rules of the game. You don't change the rules in the middle of the game. As a coach, it's hurting the kids that pisses me off."
Fisher coached Florida State from 2010 through 2017 and Texas A&M from 2018 through 2023. He won a national title with the Seminoles, although that was during a very different time in college football before name, image and likeness opportunities and the transfer portal.
Building rosters wasn't quite as full-time of a job as it is now, and the chaos of the entire system and the calendar is being highlighted with Kiffin going to LSU.
But Fisher still isn't happy with how he's handling it.
