Mark Cuban Reveals Donation to Indiana Amid 2026 CFB Transfer Portal Window

Joseph ZuckerJan 7, 2026

Dallas Mavericks minority governor Mark Cuban is willing to spend money on a winner when it comes to his alma mater.

Cuban, who graduated from Indiana University, told Front Office Sports' Alex Schiffer he's "already committed for this portal" in terms of NIL funds for the Hoosiers football team.

He declined to specify the amount but implied it's more than he pledged last year.

"Let's just say they are happier this year than last year," Cuban said.

This is a prime example of how the transfer portal and NIL deals have helped to level the playing field in college football.

Sure, the historic powers and marquee brands continue to enjoy more advantages over their peers. LSU is reportedly willing to spend as much as $30 million to build Lane Kiffin's first roster.

Schools in Indiana's position at least have a more straightforward path to turning one unexpectedly good year into success spanning multiple seasons.

In the past, major boosters could basically funnel their money toward the coach's salary or infrastructure improvements to the stadium or football facilities. Those things only go so far toward attracting the actual talent.

T. Boone Pickens' overall donations to Oklahoma State athletics go into nine figures, and the football stadium bears his name. Despite his best efforts, the Cowboys failed to become a national powerhouse, though they did hit some big highs in the Mike Gundy era.

Things might've gone differently if Pickens' donations could've more specifically gone toward player retention and recruitment.

Cuban told Schiffer he didn't instruct Indiana's athletic department on how to spend his donation.

Schools now have the option of paying players directly thanks to the House v. NCAA settlement, so it doesn't take much to connect the dots when notable boosters begin stepping up to the plate.

Indiana ranks fourth in 247Sports' composite team rankings for the transfer portal. The Hoosiers have secured commitments from TCU quarterback Josh Hoover, Michigan State wide receiver Nick Marsh and Kansas State edge-rusher Tobi Osunsanmi among others.

Cuban's cash presumably helped in a small way make that happen.
