MLB Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz Surrounding Yoenis Cespedes, Ben Revere and More

Rob GoldbergJul 30, 2015

The final days before the MLB trade deadline are rarely quiet, and this year's version is no different with plenty of notable deals already completed. The question is which other high-profile players will be on the move in the coming hours.

Cole Hamels was sent to the Texas Rangers in a relatively surprising move, but the focus quickly shifted to the Toronto Blue Jays as they acquired pitcher David Price. It has become clear there are a lot of teams that consider themselves buyers, which will lead to even more noteworthy trades going forward.

Even with time running out, here is a look at some players who could be dealt before the July 31 deadline.

Yoenis Cespedes, OF, Detroit Tigers

The New York Mets made headlines Wednesday night when they reportedly agreed to terms with a deal for Carlos Gomez before the trade eventually fell through due to medical issues. Despite the problems, the team is still apparently interesting in acquiring a big-name outfielder before the trade deadline.

According to Andy Martino of The New York Daily News, the team is considering a move for Yoenis Cespedes despite an aversion towards half-season rentals:

While the cost is unknown, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports did report the Detroit Tigers are more than willing to deal the outfielder and anyone else set to become a free agent:

On paper, it might make sense for the Mets to avoid giving up valued prospects for a player who will only be around for two months. However, the team might also enjoy avoiding financial responsibility past this season.

According to Tom Haudricourt of The Journal Sentinel, the Gomez trade was nixed due to money issues, and the Milwaukee Brewers are disputing any reported hip injury. There are two sides to the story, but if this is true, New York might be better off grabbing a player who still allows for payroll flexibility in the future.

Cespedes could provide the team with some much-needed power from the right side of the plate, as well as a major upgrade defensively in left field. With the way the starting rotation has performed as of late, this type of addition to the lineup could make a major impact in the team's playoff push over the next few months.

Tyson Ross, SP, San Diego Padres

As the more high-profile pitchers continue to come off the board, the next tier of starters becomes more valuable to the teams in need. Arguably the next best option available across the league is San Diego Padres starter Tyson Ross.

An All-Star a year ago, Ross has just a 7-8 record this year but a solid 3.38 ERA in 22 starts. He strikes batters out at a high rate and rarely allows home runs, although walks have become a problem with 61 already this season.

Despite the control problems, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports a number of teams are interested in bringing in the 28-year-old starter:

Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune adds the price is only going to go up for desperate teams:

One thing that could increase the cost of this potential deal is the fact Ross represents a long-term acquisition. Unlike many of the other options on the trade market, the pitcher is under team control and won't be a free agent until after the 2017 season.

With this in mind, San Diego won't be in any rush to trade a player who could be useful in the future. Still, a good enough offer, and the organization will change its tune in a hurry.

Ben Revere, OF, Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies already made waves by dealing away Hamels as well as sending Jonathan Papelbon to the Washington Nationals, but they might not be done making moves. According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Ben Revere might represent the next domino:

While the American League team is a mystery, Heyman reported earlier in the week the Los Angeles Angels were considering a move for Revere among others:

Revere might not have the power of other big-name acquisitions like Jay Bruce or Justin Upton. For that matter, doesn't even have the power of most minor league hitters. However, he makes up for it with a consistently high batting average and great speed that helps him remain a force on the bases.

The Los Angeles Angels have been looking for a true leadoff hitter all year long, and Revere would be the perfect fit. He would also complete an impressive defensive outfield by moving to his best spot in left.

Of course, the same could be said for a number of other contenders looking for upgrades. Even the Mets could use a true leadoff hitter who would also represent a possible platoon in center field opposite Juan Lagares.

In any case, you can be certain the Phillies will do what they can to move at least one more piece before the trade deadline.
