Report: Gresham to Stay on PUP List for 2-3 Weeks
Thursday, July 30
Gresham is expected to be an important part of the Cards offense in 2015, but according to Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910, they are taking a cautious approach with the former University of Oklahoma standout.
The two-time Pro Bowler was placed on the physically unable to perform list Wednesday, which means he isn't currently permitted to practice with the team. That is expected to be the case for the next two or three weeks, at which point Arizona is likely to start working the 27-year-old veteran into a starting role.
Gresham caught 280 passes for 2,722 yards and 24 touchdowns during his five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, and NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal views him as a strong fit with the Cards:
Arizona's offense focused heavily on the wide receiver trio of Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and John Brown last season due to the lack of a top pass-catching threat at tight end. John Carlson, who was the team's No. 1 tight end in 2014, retired this offseason.
While Gresham is on the shelf, Daniel Fells is expected to get starting reps, with younger players such as Ted Bolser and Gerald Christian seeing an increased workload as well.
Although staying on the PUP list for a few weeks may leave Gresham behind the eight ball in terms of learning the offense, it may be better for the Cardinals in the long run since more players will be ready to contribute at the tight end position when the regular season commences.
