Yankees Reportedly Discuss Trade for Marlins SP, Eye Freddy Peralta in Latest Rumors

Paul KasabianJan 4, 2026

The New York Yankees have reportedly spoken with the Miami Marlins about trading for starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, and the Bronx Bombers also continue to have interest in Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta, per Chris Kirschner and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

"With uncertainty surrounding their starting rotation to begin the season, the New York Yankees are talking to the Miami Marlins about a potential trade for starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, league sources told The Athletic.

"With discussions around the game picking up with the start of the new year, the Yankees have continued talking to numerous teams and agents, signaling their desire to add at least one more starting pitcher to the mix. They have also continued to discuss Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta, who is making $8 million in his final year before free agency."

Jon Heyman of the New York Post also connected the Yankees and Cabrera but added that the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants have interest as well.

The Yankees' rotation will be shorthanded to begin the season, as noted by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

"The pitching staff will open the season thin, with Carlos Rodón (left elbow surgery in October) projected to return by April into May and Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in March) tracking toward late May or June."

It's easy to see why the Yankees are interested in both pitchers, aside from the fact that there's a need for more starting rotation help.

The 27-year-old Cabrera was impressive last year with a 3.53 WRA (1.23 WHIP) in 26 starts. He also struck out 150 batters in 137.2 innings for a 9.8 K/9 rate. Cabrera is also under team control for three more seasons.

The 29-year-old Peralta is a two-time All-Star over his eight seasons with the Brewers. He arguably just enjoyed his best season yet, going 17-6 with 2.70 ERA (1.08 WHIP) while striking out 204 batters.

Cabrera seems like the better bet to get in a trade. Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic previously reported about his potential availability last December.

"There's a strong possibility that the Marlins end up moving one of their starters, league sources said. Sandy Alcántara and Edward Cabrera have continued to attract serious attention from other teams.

"The Marlins want to at least contend for the playoffs in 2026, and club officials are bullish on their chances of doing so. However, the Marlins want to be good for years to come, as well. So if trading a starter like Cabrera (three years of club control left) or Alcantara (club option worth $21 million for 2027) helps them acquire players toward that goal, then they probably should do it."

The Yankees just won 94 games for the second straight season, but their campaign ended with a disappointing four-game loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series. Their pitching faltered during that series, with the team allowing 34 runs.

New York apparently hopes to improve pitching via trade amid a quiet offseason that hasn't featured the team adding anyone new to the roster just yet.
