Manchester United vs. PSG: Score, Grades and Reaction from 2015 ICC

Tyler ConwayJul 29, 2015

Amid widespread speculation surrounding Angel Di Maria's anticipated move from Manchester United to PSG, the two sides went head-to-head in the International Champions Cup on Wednesday, and it was the French outfit who emerged with a 2-0 victory in Chicago.

Blaise Matuidi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic each scored first-half goals as PSG faced little resistance from an overwhelmed United squad, for whom Real Madrid target David de Gea endured a particularly poor night.

The result means PSG finished their tour tied with the New York Red Bulls on 10 points. However, the Ligue 1 champions clinched the ICC overall, having scored one more goal than their counterparts.

Matuidi (25') and Ibrahimovic (34') scored within rapid succession, allowing the French side to carry out a conservative game plan in the second half. Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp faced only three shots on goal as the United attack struggled to find any fluency.

Di Maria's absence was at the forefront of discussion heading into Wednesday night. The 27-year-old, who came over last summer from Real Madrid for a British-record £59.7 million, did not board his scheduled flight to the United States for this match.

"I have heard he was not on the plane," United manager Louis van Gaal said, per Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail. "I cannot say anything. Marcos Rojo was not on the plane, he had a passport issue but with Di Maria I don't know why."

United are also in a sour position with goalkeeper De Gea, who was replaced by Sam Johnstone at half-time. De Gea conceded the match's only two goals and seemed generally out of sorts throughout. Also the subject of near-constant transfer rumours, De Gea has barely played all summer long and will waltz into the Premier League season with an uncertain future.

“I think that in our circumstances, with the threat that David de Gea is going to Real Madrid, we have to prepare our season,” Van Gaal said, per Joe Prince-Wright of NBC Sports. “I think Sergio Romero can fulfill that because you have to handle very quickly when it may happen with David de Gea.”

Mark Ogden of the Telegraph highlighted the attitude toward De Gea at the moment:

Matuidi beat De Gea first in the 25th minute after an awkward sequence of events that probably could have been prevented. Taking a long pass as two United defenders and De Gea converged, Matuidi managed to send a weak effort past the keeper to open the scoring. Had De Gea and his defence communicated better, it's unlikely such a desperate effort would have found the net.

Ibrahimovic's goal was also courtesy of a lack of defensive focus. Having sent a pass out to Maxwell on the left side of the area, Ibrahimovic then strolled into the box unmarked as United's attentions strayed toward the ball rather than the Swede.

Overall, it was a dispiriting effort for a side that would have taken home the ICC with a victory. PSG will now move on to their regular season on a high note and look to be real contenders for a Champions League victory in 2015-16.
