MLS All-Stars vs. Tottenham: Score and Reaction from MLS All Star Game 2015
With all of the pomp and circumstance that surrounded the 20th MLS All-Star game in Colorado, American soccer was given another opportunity to show the world what its domestic league was capable of against Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
They did not disappoint, defeating the English side 2-1 Wednesday night thanks to goals from Kaka and David Villa that were scored just three minutes apart.
With a goal and assist, Kaka was named the game's most valuable player during his first year in the MLS.
Tottenham's back line was shaky from the start, as a trio of chances gave the All-Stars threatening looks at goal, but none could challenge Michel Vorm.
That is, until the 20th minute.
Kaka struck the MLS into the lead via the penalty spot, sending a hard shot into the bottom corner that Vorm had no chance of stopping.
The penalty came from a handball from Nacer Chadli, who struck the ball with his arm while going up to try to head away an MLS corner. Fox Soccer had a look at the penalty and the goal:
Villa doubled the All-Stars' lead three minutes later, as Kaka played distributor, firing in a low cross that was directed home with a left-footed effort from the center of the box.
Major League Soccer took a look at the New York City FC man's goal:
With Kaka playing at Orlando FC and Villa in New York, Paul Carr of ESPN Stats & Info revealed this stat after their goals:
Tottenham was attempting to find a way onto the scoreboard, as Harry Kane was getting acquainted with Real Salt Lake keeper Nick Rimando.
Kane started making an impact on the game in the first 10 minutes, taking a shot that almost beat Rimando through the five-hole, forcing a corner. On the ensuing set piece, the cross fell to the feet of Kane, who deflected the chance well wide.
While the MLS was dominating the first half, Kane's war with Rimando raged on. The keeper thwarted the forward again in the 34th minute with a sprawling save after the striker was given a low cross just feet away from the goal.
Kane finally found the back of the net in the 37th minute on the counter-attack, launching a shot from outside the box into the top corner to halve Tottenham's deficit.
As Kane is one of the lesser-known Premier League stars in the United States, Bleacher Report UK felt his goal was a perfect introduction to the American public:
Wholesale changes brought out 10 new MLS All-Stars in the second half, as Tottenham dominated the first half hour of the second half but could not find an equalizer despite Kane working his way into a few more chances.
But back came the MLS with a pair of chances thanks to the dynamic play of Kei Kamara and Jozy Altidore, who were proving to be a handful for the Tottenham defense, as they were not sitting back in order to hold a one-goal lead.
It worked, and a late flurry in front of Tottenham's goal killed the rest of the game off.
Since the MLS abandoned the East vs. West format in 2004, the All-Stars have won seven of the 11 games in which an international guest has been the opponent. They also defeated Mexican side Guadalajara in 2003.
It is the fifth time they have defeated a side from the Premier League, last defeating Chelsea in 2012. It's safe to say the statement from America has been made against some of the best international sides in the world, as the MLS continues to become one of the game's elite leagues.
