Peach Bowl 2026 Factors That Will Decide Oregon vs. Indiana Semifinal Bracket Game

Joe TanseyJan 2, 2026

The Oregon Ducks and Indiana Hoosiers face for the second time this season in the Peach Bowl on January 9.

Indiana won the Big Ten regular-season meeting in Eugene behind a defense that held the Ducks to two touchdowns on their home field.

Indiana's defense received plenty of praise throughout the season, but it was Oregon's defense that was arguably the best unit across all four playoff quarterfinals.

Oregon shut out the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a statement performance to the nation that it can win a low-scoring game.

Oregon's improved defense might end up as the X-factor for the Ducks in their rematch with arguably the best all-around team in college football.

Oregon's shut out win over Texas Tech caught plenty of people by surprise.

Texas Tech entered the Orange Bowl with the talked-about defense, but the Ducks flipped the script with their 23-0 victory.

Oregon forced four turnovers, totaled four sacks and held the Red Raiders to 215 total yards.

If the Ducks keep performing at that high of a level on defense, they can win the national championship.

Back in October, Oregon allowed 30 points and 326 total yards to Fernando Mendoza and Co. If it cuts that concession by 50-60 yards, Oregon will be in great shape to win in Atlanta.

But there is skepticism that Oregon can replicate the Texas Tech performance. After all, the Ducks gave up over 20 points in three of their four Top 25 matchups in the regular season.

Oregon needs to prove that the defense has turned a corner against the top team in the country so that the New Years' Day showing isn't judged as a fluke.

Indiana's Running Back Tandem

The easy point to make about Indiana's offense is that Fernando Mendoza's success, or lack thereof, will be the key to winning the Peach Bowl.

Indiana is far more well-rounded than some people think on offense. That is due to the running back tandem of Roman Hemby and Kaelon Black.

Black and Hemby combined for 188 yards in the Rose Bowl blowout win over the Alabama Crimson Tide. They had 121 yards between them in the Big Ten Championship Game triumph over the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Hemby was the more effective rusher in the regular-season win over Oregon with 70 yards on 19 carries. Black only had seven carries for 31 yards.

If the running back tandem finds success in the Peach Bowl, it will open up time for Mendoza to thrive in the passing game. It would also take pressure away from the Heisman Trophy winner to do everything himself.
