Lane Kiffin Talks 12-Team CFP Bracket Format After Ohio State, Texas Tech Losses
The College Football Playoff's 12-team format has generated plenty of discussion across the sport, from the controversy surrounding the selections of Alabama and Miami over Notre Dame to teams with the bye week going 0-6 over the last two seasons.
New LSU head coach Lane Kiffin offered his thoughts on the format Thursday:
There will never be a perfect system, but forcing teams to go through the gauntlet of a playoff is a far better way to determine the best team in the nation than picking just two teams for a national championship game and waiting over a month to see them play.
It's also way more fun.
The two strongest arguments in favor of the two-team era—or even the four-team playoff—was that it kept the remaining bowl games far more interesting and relevant, and it also made every week of the regular season vitally important. One loss could cost you everything, while teams can now afford to potentially lose twice in the regular season and still win a title if they get hot heading into the playoff.
But that's how most sports operate. If the goal is to find the best overall team, forcing a bunch of the top contenders to square off in a playoff is the best way to do it.
